325I w/Options Dilemna II

Not ANOTHER tired thread about the 325i!!!

Anyway, here's my question

I'm price hunting.

Here's my Dilemna.

I can order a 325i with NAV, Sirius, Xenon, PDC, and CA for $32,600 or buy a stripped down 330i for about the same price (+/- $200)

Personally I think I can better justify to myself getting the 325 with MORE options than buying the base 330.

Both excellent cars however eventually I will go back to CONUS, and really, I can't see needing a car that can go 150MPH(ish).

What are your thoughts?

I chose to get a 325i with options like the Nav instead of the 330i. A lot of people at e90post will champion the performance and the driving aspect of the e90. For me, I test drove both, and the 325i ZSP was more than enough power for 95% of the driving I do. So I decided by getting the 325i, I could get the iDrive, which I love.

My choice would be the 330i. You will get more resale, lowering your overall cost, and the options that are standard on it are sublime. I am waiting to see what happens with the 335i. I prefer a stripped 335i over an optioned 330i. In the more distant future, the diesels will arrive. A 320dT is one of the most functional fun cars ever; a 335dT would be a monster! If none of these interesting options materialize next year, I will opt for a 325iT w/ZSP on ED for about 31k. Just a few hundred more than what the Honda dealer wants for an accord hybrid.

Make sure you test drive the 330i, just to make sure that you make as accurate a decision as possible.

But it already sounds like you value the options more than the performance. In that case, I would choose the 325i.

As for the argument that the 330i will have a better resale value, I find several problems with that.

One, no car is an investment, so to buy one based on that fact that you won't lose as much money doesn't make sense to me. In that case, I wouldn't buy as expensive a car since the loss (in absolute terms) would be more than if you bought a less expensive car.

Secondly, when the 335i comes out, the 330i will no longer be the top line model (ignoring the M editions), whereas the 325i has been (and will still retain) the status of being the "entry level" 3 series. I believe the 330i has more to fear in terms of resale value from the release of the 335i than the 325i does.

Third, you should go with makes you happiest. Will the potentially better resale value of the 330i make up for the options you won't have? No one knows what the future holds, so go with what you know will make you happy now.

Just my two cents, of course

Another thought: How long will you have the car in Germany? Any to a 325 vs. 330 there?

I had the same dilemma with the 330xi and the 325xi. I gave up the I-drive for the extra hp and resale value. I justified this by doing some research into the aftermarket Nav systems - such as the Tomtom that is touch screen and updates on weather and traffic - extras that the Idrive doesn't have. Plus, companies like brodit.com make really good mounts so the aftermarket nav systems look pretty good in the car, and it's about 1/4 the price of the idrive. I would rather be driving a 330 with a tomtom than a 325 with idrive.
