Overheat

Hey guys, so today I was getting ready for school, started it up before I left the house to warm up. When I came back out I heard the fan running really loud thought it was just the heater.. Anyway, I was driving for like 10 mins, the heater was still cold, the fan was still running. I pulled over and the overheat light came up. Turned it off and checked the coolant. There was very little coolant so I added some in. Thought all is well til the overheat light came up again. Could be the water pump or thermostat huh? I was going to bring it in but my question is will they bring up my aftermarket intake and say that is causing the issue? I mean it shouldn't be a problem cause I drove with the intake for a few weeks no problem. If anyone can help or give me some thoughts it'd be great. Thanks

thermostat is designed to fail open, it won't cause overheating, just causes the car to take longer warming up.

the water pump is your issue, with that though, you might as well replace the thermostat at the same time to save on labor when it does go out.

Yeah, I'm going to bring it in today. Although, I don't know if my car will make it because the dealer is kind of far

i wouldn't try to drive it in an overheat condition, you could crack the expansion tank (plastic) or worse.

I would say water pump or a break in a coolant line somewhere. Are you sure the car isn't leaking anything? If there's a lost of pressure in the coolant system all heat will be lost from the cabin. Post back when you get information from the dealer.

So my SA called just now and said that the water pump needs to be replaced. He also said that it's recommended to change the thermostat too. Grand total is 2 grand and well.. I'm not going to pay 2 grand to fix a water pump. My warranty was out 15000 miles ago so that's no good. Anyway, tomorrow I'm going to drop it off at this shop my sister knows. She's worked on her bmw there and it's way cheaper. Pretty much an indy shop. Hopefully they fix this thing asap.

Yeah, I would agree with Mike. I recently had this happen to me and upon starting my car within minutes the fan will turn on. Since I wasn't covered under warranty, the actual estimate was about 1.7k but I got everything replaced for $800*. In case you're wondering, my car was still at < 59,7xx miles when it had the failure.

I'm only at 64k. Got it fixed for 1100 which is a thousand cheaper than bmw dealership. Anyway, guessing that it's an electric water pump that's why it goes out so fast? I mean any regular water pump should last for a very long time. Maybe it's cause bmw has so much issues with their parts. Who knows. Hopefully this water pump will last..

Well, the thing is that my situation is a little different. If you're close with your SA or if they're cool enough, they can do a side-job for you which means you pay for parts and the mechanic's labor AND you're still covered under BMW's 2-year warranty so I won't have to worry about my water pump going out. I question the legality of this but I highly recommend everyone to form connections especially with your local dealership.
