Climate Control REST function

I don't get how this feature is supposed to work - its the REST button (right hand side) on the climate system on my E91. Feature is supposed to provide warm air into the car when the engine is turned off but requires a certain set of circumstances before it will work - god knows what they are because I have had the car 20 months and it has only ever worked once - any advice welcomed.Wondered whether my battery might be low on charge retention as the voltage of the battery is one of the parameters that needs to be met according to the handbook.

That's how I understand it - and it's worked the couple of times I've tried to use it.

Engine must have enough heat to warm the air flow.
Engine off, but keys still in so ignition on.

It doesn't last very long, even with a hot engine though.

The basic idea is:-

Stop the car. Turn engine off. Remove key. Press 'REST' button. Get out of car. Lock it and walk away to get some cash from cash machine. Pop into the shop and buy some bits. Return to car to have a warm cabin.

It works great on mine.

Same here. Use it everytime I go to the shops when its cold as it has been.

You need to drive for at least 5 minutes before the engine will be deemed warm enough to draw heat from. I also understand the battery must be in good condition.

Didn't know it worked when you were out of the car - that's a good feature!

+1,

I use it mostly when leaving the car / kids at a garage or similar. works Great.

As soon as the heat source drops, it shuts off anyway.

Not on my 2011 E91. But I do like how the heated seats come back on automatically if the car has only been stood for a short time. Saves valuable seconds of button pressing. I like to think I'll enjoy a longer and happier retirement thanks to BMW.

I believe the car can be recoded to re-activate this function and remove the ALL function.

Post Christmas cash famine has meant that my 50 mile round trip to work has been spent at a wallet friendly 60 mph witht he cruuuz on - basically I have been maximising fuel economy - 47.8mpg on the last tank - beter than the economy meter was predicting however Miss Daisy driving probably hasn't got the coolant to temperature - sound far fetched - not really - The company I used to work for supplied the first Focus and Mondeo TDCi's with the thermostat and housing assemblies - and these cars never warmed up properly even after 15 miles I had 2 TDCI Focus's and they took forever to get hot- blame super efficient HPCR diesels - gave the Beemer a harder time the night after my post, pulled up on the drive and pushed the button and bingo - REST works a treat. Doh. Thanks for the responses

not really just a pain when the two are out of sync and fans are going mad, it just makes more sense to have all as that button and rest as somewhere else.

Most other cars I've driven with dual climate have the merge button there.

sorry magic, missed off the '' I was joking

But VAG have a merge function by holding the 'auto' button IIRC, so BMW don't need to waste a whole button just for 'all'.

I'm happy with the REST button.

Given the choice between a button that provides a heating feature or a button that means i don't have to rotate 2 dials (but provides no added value) I'd take the extra feature.
