Overheating issue with bmw

Hi guys just had a trouble with the bmw on the highway. Driving like usual and I got greeted with a amber engine warning light and then straight to red warning light and the engine started stalling. gave it half hour to cool down and then within 5 minutes the light came back on. topped up coolant straight away but realised the cooolant was not that hot before i topped up.

After a lot of reading two possible reasons i can think of is water pump and thermostat. would just swopping them with new will solve the problem or would i need to remap the ecu and stuff.

any info will help.

thanks

That's water pump all right. Replacing it will fix the problem.

Can you post your car's year and mileage? May by a tell tale sign of the water pump...

I'm having the same issue. 08 335 with 64k. Only thing is, I also had a random light to come on and say that I had an exterior light out, which wasn't true. And all audio went out for a few minutes the day before (the seat belt chime and audio from the radio went out but the radio was on). I've been seeing that battery voltage could be a culprit?

I am having the same issue...last night while I was driving on the highway saw the warning message and car came to a stop...gave it 2 hours to cool down and still the same issue....any one know what is the issue? and how much would it cost?

Was reading this http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/arc.../t-438648.html and looks like it is electrical water pump failure which costs around $850

Called up 2 dealers and here is the price quote for Wterpump:

dealer 1 : Parts : $555.27 + Labour $408 ( 3hours)
dealer 2 : Parts : $558 + Labour $470

Was wondering if this is too high?

Sounds about right, an independent shop probably will save you about $200. You should also look into changing the thermostat too. Ask if they will charge $0 for labor since it is attached to the water pump. I wonder if you don't say anything will they tell you that you need a thermostat during the job, if so what a bunch of crooks. Post an update no matter what you decide to do and the outcome. Thx.

Doubt an independent shop would install your parts. That is like bringing eggs to a diner. . But a reputable independent can fix it. Try posting on the regional sub forum.

Can they find out by scanning key that in deed the problem is with the Waterpump or does the car have to be taken to the dealer?

Not sure if either the dealer or indy can scan if the pump is bad. By scanning I don't mean your key but with their diagnostic tools. A dealer will charge for a scan, an Indy may not if you allow them to fix it.

If you don't have a radiator leak, it's the water pump. BMW pumps are known for self-destructing around 100K miles give or take. A lot of shops will strongly recommend pre-emptive replacement at the 100K mile service, if it's still the original pump.

No need to take it to the dealer, though. Use an indy BMW shop.

Got it done at a dealership at $1037.... a couple of the pins for the side trim was broken and when I asked him to fix it he gave me estimate of $150....WTF? the pins are $1 a peice and takes a minute to fix these.. I got the pins myself and fixed it....I hate it when they try to rip your off .....I hate this dealership , I knew before hand that it was a waterpump failure and I knew how much it was going to cost me beforeI took it to dealership however when I got the call from dealership saying that the waterpump has to be fixed he told me it will be $1370....I told him that I already knew that the water pump had to be replaced and it would cost $1037 including labour ..then he said he will refer to his 'so callled ' Notes ... and agreed to do it for $1037 ...

You didn't get the thermostat changed too?

Just lastnight my cars fans we're on full speed, then got a amber then red water temp light. Lost power and turned car off. Ridiculous that my car is an 08' with 33k! It got towed to dealer and now waiting for diagnosis. I know its the pump/thermostat. Car is under factory warranty till 6/12, at least it went now while its covered but use to pumps going at 70-80k..keep posted

Also do they replace oem pumps with metal impellers? So this doesn't happen every 30-50k?

Yes, there is a DIY for it. The level of difficulty depends on your level of skill in repairing cars, your compliment of tools, and a proper facility to perform the work. If you've have replaced a water pump on another car, or done brake work successfully, then the job is not that difficult.

The failure of the pump IS NOT related to the impeller. The impeller is plastic, but it is small, about the size of a half-dollar coin, and made of ABS plastic that is suitable to high temperature operation. The impeller and motor do not fail. The electronic components that control the motor fail. For some reason, BMW decided to put the control electronics on the back of the motor housing (instead of a separate housing somewhere in the car in a less hard environment) where they are constantly in high temperatures, which eventually leads to failure.

Thank you for clearing it up, I'm used to the old type of water pumps. Like on my old 94' 325is that had the impeller that fails. BMW called back and stated electric water pump failed and all covered under factory warranty.
