e93 owners - anyone experience roof problems?

Just picked up a e93 cab, its cold here in vancouver so never really had a chance to test out the roof (only a few times before buying it of course to test)....anyways, anyone experience any problems with their roofs or any tips I should know?....is it bad to open it in cold weather? is it bad to open and close it too many times?

Not really, when it's really cold, sometimes it makes a sound when turning out of the parking space or something, but that's just the latches because of the metal on metal. I did have some water drip on my passenger and rear window. Had it taken once while IN warranty and them again after a year. They put new seals BUT no improvement. It only happens when it rains a lot and only a few drops. Never take it to a care ash, too much pressure. Otherwise, enjoy it.

I got a e93 in december, and was wondering about mods, every website I go to has parts for the e90/92. Will the aftermarket e92 exhausts fit the e93? How about lowering springs?

OP: I notice a rattle time to time, but no biggie. I don't mean to thread jack either lol, just a quick question, and didn't want to create a whole new thread.

lol no worries i need to know those questions too!

do you guys open and close your top often without any problems? for some reason i am worried to do it too often cause it might wear out the motor and i dont want to spend big $$$ to fix it haha....also do you think opening the top in cold temps will be bad for the motor?

^ I bought mine from Carmax and got their warranty, so the roof is covered until 100,000 miles. After which I'll probably get rid of the car anyways. I didn't know there is some sort of sensor on the roof because I tried to bring the roof down in my garage which has ceiling that are higher than usual but when I tried to open it the car said no, then I went outside and tried again and it went right down.

There are alot of people that dont have issues other than the normal noises and creaks of the convertible top. Totally normal. As for exhaust, the e93 needs to have a specific midpipes to work. E92 exhaust would work but requires slight modifications and added washers for the support brace in the rear. There are alot of modded E93 on this forum when it comes to performance mods. Do a search.

I got my 335is cabrio at the end of August. Since then, until very recently due to more rainy weather, I opened/closed the roof at least 4 times per day = 28+ times per week.

I have had 2 real issues, none seem to be permenant.

1. after about a week in the heat of summer, the black grease on the mechanical works of the roof mechanism, which seemed to have been over-applied at the factory, melted and dripped onto the roof sections and rear deck (Cream Beige). At the dealer they said this is normal with new roofs in hot areas. They cleaned it off fairly well for me, and i had to subsequently clean off a little more. This grease seems to be a silicone type of grease and is solid black.

2. after about 5 weeks the roof would catch on opening at the right side post/socket. I would pop out usually after lowering and trying again
Took it to the dealer and it turned out there was a metal burr (at least one) in the socket. Seemed to me like a factory/break in issue, not "normal". Fortunately this issue was fixed when they removed the metal scraps.

I am glad there is a 4 year full warranty on this car, and I leased it for 3 years. Would not want to fix the roof after the fourth year for something major on my own dime! These roofs may turn out to be rock solid for many years, but we don't know that yet, do we? Still I love the roof and think it is a great piece of engineering.

I put the top down even down to 45 degrees F. I use the heater and seat warmer especially on a cool night, and bought an aviator hat for trips over 15 or 20 minutes.

Congrats on your new purchase. I bought a 2011 335is Cab in August as well. I have used the roof extensively until around late October. I never have and never would recommend opening and closing in the winters here but your in Burnaby should you should be more than safe! Enjoy

I have an '08, and have had only one roof issue. It had a light rattle where the roof meets the A-pillar at windshield, only on very rough pavement. It turned out to be a bent positioning pin. Not sure if it was from factory, but it did it for over a year that I was aware of - not very noticeable. Otherwise, perfect, and essentially rattle free after 4 years of frequent use. There is a warning about low temp operation in manual somewhere - I think it is down around 36 degrees or even lower.

No issues with mine yet either. Slight rattle from time to time but I only notice it when the windblocker is in so I think that is where mine is coming from.

The warning is not to use the roof when the outside temp is lower than 14F. I have a feeling the hydraulic fluid is no longer the correct viscosity lower than that.

Up and down for two cycles on Sunday...about 28F, with no problems. Stole the car from the wife to head down to the beach for the usual Sunday AM get-together. There had to be over a hundred cars out with a good BMW showing, along with the requsite Corvettes and Mustangs. A new black M3 showed up and was a big hit, even among the Z06 fanatics (me included).
Anyway, enjoy your drop-top! Thats why you bought it.......

Zero issues or rattles after one year of ownership on mine. Seems bullet proof.

Customed ordered my 2007 335i vert as soon as they were released, and took delivery in July '07. Lived in California until 2009, then here in Atlanta. Unless the temp is below 50F or so, I put the top down every time I take the car out, sometimes several times a day. Can't imaging how many openings and closings that is to date, but it's a bunch! Have only had two problems with the roof, both after it was out of warranty:

A relay went bad and the roof would not go back up one morning as I pulled into work. Immediately took it to dealer and they replaced it that day.

Another time one of the black strings that helps position all the interior trim broke. The dealer put in a new set for free, even though no warranty. At this visit the dealer remarked at how many open/close cycles the roof has had (they can tell through the diagnostics).

Each time the roof was serviced it had to be reinitialized to ensure it would close with all the correct tolerances, etc. and it closes the same today as it did when I first got the car.

I will add that every time I wash the car I clean and treat the rubber seals with Aerospace 303 which seems to protect against any uv damage and keep them pliable. Have never had a leak even through southern summer downpours.

One related problem I have never been able to get corrected (because the dealer can't duplicate the issue) is that after closing the roof then raising the windows, the front passenger window will go up most of the way, then go back down as if the pinch sensor had been activated. This happens to the passenger window about 50% of the time, and also happens to the driver window, although only about 10% of the time. Closing the window a second time always works fine.

All in all, the E93 roof is an engineering marvel, offering the best of both coupe and convertible worlds...

awesome thanks for the posts guys!

dtoptop335, when you fixed your roof out of warranty was it expensive?

My warranty is up in a couple months and deciding whether I should buy extended for 3k +...service records show no problems with engine/car but if fixing the roof costs lots of money it might be something to consider warranty for.

thanks!

Its minus weather here and I've opened the roof a couple times here and there to show friends my new ride, but other then that haven't tested much. It seems to be pretty solid, but I would do as stated above.

Maintain it and grease it up every once and a while and you should be fine. Enjoy the new ride!!

I think it was about $300 to fix the relay, which isn't too bad, but I can only imagine how much it would be for a major repair. Might be worth the bucks for the warranty if you plan to keep the car.

Does it only do it the first time the windows are closed after closing the roof? That's how mine is; doesn't do it if I'm just raising windows after they've been open when the roof hasn't been open as well.

Exact same thing here, except reversed. My driver's window does it about 50% of the time and passenger about 10%. Haven't had my first service yet so I don't know if anything can be done. It sounds like no.
