Thinking of taking a road trip. anyone with 335i road trip stories?

Well for spring break i was thinking about going to DC from Dallas i have never taken my 335i on a trip more than 100 miles. i currently have 74,xxx miles on the car. i have minor misfiring and JB4, DCI, and Homemade BOV<-- LOL. I do have run flats with good tread on them. I do have a 189 spare tire and the stuff for it that i could possibly fit in the back. but I'm out of warranty and don't have towing...(ofcouse i will get AAA if i decide to go) but warranty might be an issue...

anyone think taking my E93 335i on a road trip might be bad idea. is it reliable enough to drive 1300 miles. or should i just take my Toyota Pickup, or just fly...

335i owners with high milage please post story
As always Thanks for any and all input

Here is my take on your situation, i know it sounds fun taking the 3 on the road trip however a small misfire problem can lead to major breakdowns on the highway ESPECIALLY IN THE COLDER MONTHS!.

I dont know why but when its colder out the n54 has a tendency to miss more often then when its warmer ( just my opinion).

I was going to a wedding with my family in my sedan ( around 100 miles) it was cold out and the car started up just fine. Well about halfway their the car misfired just a lil bit, then again and again until it started to violently shake as if i had 2 flat tires.

I pulled over to the shoulder shut the car off and started up again, I made it another 10 miles until it happened again. i got their safely but had a fam member take me home and had the car towed to BMW.

Right after that i had the recall done to the car, HPFP and injectors to where it ran fine for over 1 year and 15k miles .

The N54 is just as reliable as the fuel system is strong. As long as you have fresh injectors, sparks and HPFP i dont see why your trip would have any hiccups.

Bring an extra wheel with a RFT and you will be fine. Their is alot of hate on the RFT's but you dont realize how great they are until something bad happens. I hit a pothole at 80mph that blew out my RFT's sidewall abut 4 inches wide. believe it or not that tire got me home over 90 miles away.

EDIT: BTW, when i first got the car i did a 700 mile road trip and the car ran like a champ. Note, Thats with fresh fuel system parts

Just got back from a 5 000 kms roadtrip, the car chewed up miles and let me drive for 17 hours straight, with pit stops for gas.
Sweden-Italy and back home again +checking out stuff in I.
Passing Munich on fridays suck since it was bumper to bumper for 2-3 hours...but that won't be a problem of yours going from Dc to Dallas.

I have about 3 500 miles on my car, and would go again without hesitation.
As the others said fix missfires before leaving.

The misfiring has been happening since like 74,000 miles, i changed my spark pugs, O2 sensors, cleaned my VANOS sensors and about to change my coils I'm just hoping they are not my injectors! if they are screw the road trip...and my car.
but i drive the car hard with the tune and the misfiring is only major on startups but virtually disappears when driving.

Lol trust me been their done that, they start lightly in the mornings and progressively get worst over time. After a while the car will violently shake in the morning and smell like rotten eggs. Ask me how i know?

Thats %111010101010 leaky injectors, hold off on your trip until you get em replaced or who knows you might be on the recall list.

Do 8 hour / 500+ mile trips all the time!

The car eats it up.

I drive for work a ton, have done several 800-1500 mile trips. Not a peep from the car. I think you'll probably be fine, and if you do break down, chances are you will be close to a BMW dealer. Misfires could be an issue though which would make me question whether a trip would be a good idea.

Personally, I would not take a trip in a car with a misfire.

+1

If you don't trust your car to drive 1300 miles don't trust it to drive 13 miles. Find out what is wrong and have it fixed.
