Who regrets buying their 335i?
New to forum here and considering the 335i/135i sometime in the coming year.
I have driven a n54 335i coupe and an M3 coupe thought both were amazing. M3 is out of the question right now though. However, after searching this forum quite thoroughly I am getting second thoughts due to maintenance/reliability issues regarding this car. My plan would be to get a 2010 n54, with a year left of factory warranty then go with a mild reflash, downpipes and intercooler after the warranty expires. I am just really concerned about the reliability after the warranty expires. Even if I can afford the maintenance, which I'm guessing will be around $1500-$2000 per year, I don't want to have a daily driver in the shop all the time. From what I have read, some have worry free cars while others have had lemons. So who here has regretted their purchase? Also, considering the Genesis coupe and 370Z but I am wondering if the extra performance/enjoyment of the BMW is worth the added cost. |

The N54 can be a cruel mistress, but totally worth it in any event.
A hyundai? Really? I mean it's objectively pretty cool, but a BMW it aint.

You compared a BMW and a Hyundai... GTFO
There is so much wrong in your post OP. I don't know what to say besides, if you want a comfortable, reliable car go buy a Lexus. |

All of the people that I personally know that have had N54/N55 cars have had ZERO issues.
Not saying nothing will happen, but these cars are more reliable than the general public thinks. |

Ha, no way. My car has been pretty trouble-free and regular maintenance doesn't cost anywhere near your figure for me and I drive a whole shit ton.
Don't get a 370z unless you want an early back surgery. The thing almost broke my spine on a test drive. |

As someone who was in your boat (never debated with a Hyundai only a G35S) I can sympathize with your situation. From what I've read and gathered, maintenance and reliability will not be an issue as long as you stay on top of things. I'd suggest finding the right car for you with a service history you can verify and feel comfortable with. If the BMW is the car you want go for it. Nothing worst than having buyer's remorse on a depreciating asset.

Care to point out what is wrong? The info I above was found by searching this forum, which most people suggest to do before they ask questions. I have no desire for a lexus. I wasn't comparing it as an equal nor did I imply that. The Hyundai is simply a cheaper alternative to a BMW. I searched another thread recently where a guy who owned genesis coupe was strongly advised by most on this forum to NOT trade over to a 335i out of warranty. I didn't recall any hate towards Hyundai on that thread.

I regret not getting my 335i sooner! Although I bought a used one that had the history of the hpfp failure, I would not let go of her. So far, no issues. My cars have always been japanese cars but when I finally test drove and looked at BMW's, the quality and engineering difference is night and day. For most of my adult life, I stayed away from Euro cars because of what I heard from others. I didn't even bother test driving one until I bought mine. I looked at the IS350 before settling on my 335i and I can't believe the difference in drive and overall feel of the car. The BMW is a much better built car. Is it as reliable as the Lexus? Probably not but I think I'd stay on top of the major maintenance and do my own in between. I do have full extended and maint until end of next year so it's a bit of an insurance policy, but honestly, I'd renew my extended (if its possible).

My N54 is smooth, more than powerful enough for my purposes, and even good on gas mileage if I keep my foot out of it. Brilliant for city and freeway driving, and better yet in the twisties. I could ask for nothing more, and never even considered a 350 or 370 Z. But I believe I could really shock a Z's owner if they didn't suspect...

No regrets and if I could travel back in time I would still buy the same car.
One HPFP failure in my 335i btw. I'm just patiently waiting to see what the F32 looks like

Also, the Hyundai is much cheaper than the BMW but Hyundai is having some issues. Like the pull at highway speeds in the Sonata. Do you really think a car company that has been known for making POSs for years can suddenly make great cars and nothing be wrong with them? BMWs have known problems such as window regulators but everything else about them make that problem nothing compared to what you gain by driving them. If BMWs did not drive the way they did I'm sure many people here would be driving something else, myself included. |

I'm coming from a highly efficient 4-cylinder car, so I regret the 335i very slightly, about twice a week, when I'm filling gas.
The second I get behind the wheel, feel the perforated leather of M-sport bits on the shifter and steering wheel, feel the heft and weight of the steering, notch the shifter into gear, squeeze the gas, hear and feel that gravely sewing-machine growl from the TT straight six... No. No, I don't regret it one bit. |

No regrets here.
Had to replace #6 fuel injector and low fuel pressure sensor 4 months out of warranty...shit happens. If you already have it in your mind that maintenance is going to be $1.5k to $2k per year then just buy the extended warranty for roughly $3000 and do only reversible mods like JB4, intake, etc.

Absolutely NO regrets!
I had a '07 335i that I put 90,500 miles on and I recently traded it on a '11 335is. The '07 was virtually trouble free and I drive a lot, obviously. It went everywhere with poise, including the drag strip. One HPFP, valve cover gasket, and control arms. No biggee. My favorite platform combination (engine / suspension) ever. If the OP is considering other vehicles, maybe they are the way to go. You don't need to talk yourself out of a 335i. |

Another option I suggest is factor the cost of an aftermarket warranty with your 'new to you' 335i. This adds piece of mind, freedom to take it to car to the dealership where they should give you a loaner while you car is being repaired. If you car happens to not need any repairs for several years, most warranty companies will refund you a good percentage of the cost of the warranty if you do not have a claim.

i shopped for a gen coupe and a 370z as well and heres my opinion on both. The 370 is a nice car but its a true sports car. 2 seater is very impractical and the ride was a little hard. while its a nice car i couldn't see myself keeping it for a long time. The Gen coupe is a nice car for the price, but at the end of the day its a Hyundai and you can't compare a hyundai to a bimmer. I believe the 2010+ 335's come with the N55 engine which is "supposed" to be more reliable. I have an n54 and haven't had any problems so far. The 335 is a better car overall. have a look at a g37. you won't have to worry about hpfp problems etc and even tho the g37 just doesn't drive as well as the 335 does...its still a great car

I kinda do (regret it). I'm not sure I feel like saying "I should have bought xxx" and have 100 opinions on why that choice sucks before the altar of BMW but....
My 3 biggest negatives are: 1. Not unreliable but just enough bugs to keep you back at the dealer 3-4 times a year. Pulling mods off every time is getting very old. 2. Depreciation - Trade in value is barely 50% in < 3 years. As expensive as these cars are, if you're willing to piss away $25-$30k in depreciation, you can buy alot nicer car. I could have bought a 911 or GTR back in '09 and my cost to own in terms of depreciation might be more, but not meaningfully. If you can write the initial check, you can do alot better. 3. Handling - I've come to the conclusion that either my car is broken or the majority of guys with 335's w/tunes are young, don't know any better or are used to driving front wheel drive cars with 200hp. This car is the fastest car I've ever owned but hands down the least fun to drive fast. Maybe my S2000 ruined me? |
