Flooding

Just wondering how you're all getting on with our lovely summer weather?

I live a bit south of Gloucester, so we're clear of the actual flooding and water outages, but the major power sub-stations that might have to be shutdown would probably get us. Imagine no E90Post

Working in Cheltenham we had water today, but almost certainly won't have any tomorrow. Power was on, even though they said it might not be, but who knows tomorrow?

The guys I work with that live in Tewkesbury haven't slept all weekend due to the helicopters on search and rescue duties, but are all above water. They even made it in to work though the backroads today, but it did take them six hours to get home on Friday, including having to abandon their cars and walk!

Yeah, some were flooded out only a couple of weeks ago.

The worst bit for me is that my E91 is likely to be in Tewkesbury, so might be flooded.

My sister works in Gloucester at the hospital and they are having to run that on bottled water! No washing of patients and limiting water and energy usage as much as possible.

You get used to it when you live in York! Saying that though, I've never had a home flooded yet.

There is something deeply wrong about being in teh middle of a flood and being told that there is no water in the tap.

Good luck to all those affected.

I concur with all the sentiments made. It must be an awful experience no doubt protracted into months waiting for insurance assessors and builders to sort the mess out.

I heard on the TV that some insurance companies will only cover the bare minimum that they can get away with. So if the bottom half of yr kitchen is wrecked they will only replace the lower cupboards etc even if that means a mismatch with the upper cupboards. If that happened to me I would go beserk!

Yes, it really is horrific watching it on the news. Hopefully water levels will start to lower soon and everything will get back to 'normal' - or at least to a state where people can start the cleanup operation.

Don't get me wrong, I really feel for all those who have been affected by the Floods Doncaster, Leeds, Sheffield, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Lincoln, Oxfordshire, etc.

But the TV coverage has been disproportionate. Even though the north was equally affected, we didn't have anywhere near the level of coverage. It seems the media only became interested once it started affecting 'Middle England' and the Guardian readership !.

Also, I think the response by the Government has been appalling, a few paltry appearances by GB, but most the talking left to Hillary Benn. Labour may be leading the polls, but media-savy and TB's presentation skills GB aint got

Whilst everyone is working their backsides off to safeguard power supplies and to render help to everyone in need there does seem to be a distinct lack of planning going on.

Following the surrendering of the Mythe treatment works to the floods authorities had at least 24hours notice that water was going to run out. But it took 48 hours to get bottled water in and 72 hours to get the bowsers out. Clearly at this time they also knew that many of the county resevoirs were not being replenished, but were assuring those of us to the south that water supply was not a problem. It's only know that the supplies are running out that they are admitting the issue... and who knows when the water will arrive.

The farmers are also being hit hard with some dairy farmers down to their last hour of water. They are looking at having to slaughter cattle as a result.

I read that wrong. For a minute I thought you wrote "If you don't know what it is ask Carl"

Interestingly enough I made the exact same point to anyone who would listen the other night. Flooding must be horrific. But we have sunshine today!!

I hope things improve quickly for everyone affected by the flooding & I hope you receive your E91 without any problem, Matt.

All the best.

Viv.

BTW- it's pretty dry up here in the north-east right now, fortunately.

Charles im glad everything is OK at camp Lovibond.

However i have a problem with all this publicity. In Yorkshire and Derbyshire there has been this type of Flooding for a couple of months now and hardly a peep from the press, now its in middle england where they read the Guardian and its all over the place, the north south gap is still alive and well.....

....are you my lost twin you handsome bastard

Sadly I was born south of the Watford Gap, but on the day I married my wife, my father-in-law gave me one of these?

Can I be an honorary northerner for the meet ?

I too am originally from the South to, London born in fact. Having lived up norrff for 15 years (my wife is from Lancashire). I consider myself a missionary from the south, spreading the good habits of gentle southern folk to the more 'earthy' northern folk (I made that up).

So actually I must be an honorary Northener.
