09 N54.. How many miles is too many?

Looking for an E90 09 335i (or x-drive) and am wondering if 50,000mi at $26,000 is too many miles, I mean some cars have lower miles, I mean there are a lot of 335s also with 20k's and 30k's mileage for that price range.. down south and in the midwest, there is a surpising number of Sport Premium 335s in this price range. But what should be a limit?

But I am wondering what a limit should be in terms of miles where the car is done with its "healthy" life and will be a headache, I have never really heard of anyone on here with 80k+ on an N54.. all these threads I search up are from 2009'ish and nobody really has a lot of miles..

I would hope to keep the car until 100k or 2016, that would be ideal!

That's alot for a 2009. I just hit 20,000 a few days ago on my 2008. And I got this with 14,000 miles, fully loaded -nav for just under $30k, factory and CPO warranty.

50k Miles is normal. Depends what production month, but it's basically 4 years old.

I drive my car tons. E92 with 71k and its an 08. I bought this for $32k with 28k on it in March of 2011. I am toning my driving down, but the car is plenty reliable bar mysterious water pump failures and performance modification related issues. That's 30k on E85 btw. Enjoy it!

Amen -- These aren't exotic sports cars so 12-15k per year is normal. I have an '08 that I bought this year & luckily it only had 27k (under 7k a year), which is an absolute steal. For an MY09, anything between 40-50k is normal. I'd avoid anything over 60k just because there are several with lower mileage & the price difference at that point is negligible.

High miles with a newer year isn't necessarily a bad thing. More than likely it means it was a highway car which are pretty easy miles.

I'll take 50k on an 09 from all highway miles vs 30k on an 08 with tough city miles.

I'm at 62k on my 08 that is CPO. Like another member said, the only problem I have had is the water pump (probably because I'm in Texas and I had max cool mode on full time with my JB4). I bought the car with 15K and have been fully modded with RB's using E85! Still using the STOCK HPFP FTW!!! As long as you do preventative maintenance, you should be good! I would try and haggle on the price a little bit if I was you bout these N54's are very strong motors. My buddy who has been modded since about 50K has 125k miles on his 335 and it still pulls hard and strong! Its just all about how you take care of it!

You're worried about problems long-term with an N54 powered 335i but all you ask about is mileage...? That's not the determining factor in long-term reliability. You are shopping the car's history and the previous owner(s) more than anything else. Ideally look for a CPO car, if not, at least buy it directly from the previous owner.

I would look for:

1. Clean Carfax, no serious accident history
2. Not too many owners, (not more than 2), car didn't get "flipped" too much
3. Was the car driven in areas that use salt on the road in winter?
4. Has, at the very minimum, all BMW recommended maintenance been done on time, and have all the recalls been done (HPFP replaced, etc), spark plugs replaced if over 45k.
5. Is the car CPO, or has it been maintained above BMW standards ("old school maintenance"). This is a MAJOR plus. Transmission / differential oil at 30k (60k for auto trans). Valve cleaning (walnut blast) at 30k ideally, 50k minimum.
6. Is the car configured the way you want it? Does it have a lot of electronic options that are very costly to fix in the future (Nav, Active Steering, Active Cruise, etc.)
7. No "weird" modifications. No unsuitable or problematic aftermarket parts installed. You have to be careful with modded cars to ensure that it's got the right parts from the best vendors and that they were installed correctly.

I ranked all the above as a higher priority for me than mileage. Also, rare build configurations should, in my opinion, carry a premium (ex. manual trans, no iDrive, no Nav, no Premium Package, no moonroof).

Also: Low mileage cars from cold areas that didn't get "old school" maintenance and especially ones that weren't garaged could potentially be trouble.

Also, the owner has to want to sell. I have an '09 E92 that's just about to hit 49k and I wouldn't even consider taking $26k for it (it's also got over 2 years of warranty and maintenance remaining). There are other cars that you could buy for less, but I wouldn't sell mine.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

My 09 has 42k miles on it and it is what would be considered relatively low mileage since it is almost 4 years old.

Plenty of 335i's with over 100k miles. There's even one with over 215k miles posted in the thread here. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...384184&page=11

50k miles is right around the mileage where you want to get the intake valve cleaning and spark plugs done if they haven't been done already on the car.

+1 I just added that to my list in my previous post. My plugs were done at 42.5k, and I'm getting my valves cleaned next week at LTBMW will be at 49k.

BMW won't clean the valves under warranty unless you have serious drivability problems. So that's an owner-paid maintenance, like transmission oil changes.

Thank you! great breakdown! I know with Lexus there is a way online with a VIN to obtain service history.. does BMW have a similar system online or would it require a dealer visit?

And thanks to everyone else too . It seems 50k for the 2009 will be the ceiling of how high I go with miles for that price range, just don't want to buy a car that is done with its "usable healthy" life.. but yes I understand there are many more factors than just mileage that should be in play

That's average miles. It seems like a car from your area should have lower miles.
