Ashtray removal? Have smoker pkg. Want place to set my phone!!
I love my car. One of my only gripes is there is no place to set my phone that won't sent it flying all over the car with a sharp turn or a mashed throttle.
I've seen the insert for the ashtray that looks to be a rubber grip type dish. This seems perfect except I have the ashtray with cig lighter up there. Has anyone swapped with this setup? Any cutting or ccrazy business? Tired of holding my phone in my crotch.....radiowaves on my sack = no bueno!

They make a sunglass holder that replaces the ash tray. It might fit your needs depending on the size of your phone. One downside, is you will also lose the cig lighter in that spot as well. Most people use it for charging items and don't want to lose it. But it's an option. Parts can be found for around $20

Yeah its an easy swap. Order the tray from tischer or your local parts department it can't be much. Then pull the center trim off, remove a few bolts around the ashtray and replace it with your new one.

http://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/201...iagram=1942370 just a heads up on tischer, last time i tried ordering 1 low-cost item from them, it was cheaper at my local stealership because of Tischers set-rate shipping options not sure if its still the case but now you have a part# to call your dealership with. |

I did this a few months ago. Go to your dealership and ask to order a sunglasses holder tray. Don't get the cover since you already have one. It only cost me like $25 if I remember... But it works like a charm and it's an awesome place for my sunglasses (it would fit a phone too). It's an easy install that took me like 30-45 mins. There are TONS of DIY's in that section of E90post. Make sure you have the right screwdriver though (had to borrow one from my grandpa so that was a hassle).
Just a question, but why doesn't you phone stay put in the the small tray inbetween your shift boot and middle console? That's where I put mine and it never moves since the texture is grippy. I have it connected to my aux cord and I can check my texts at stoplights and such or call someone. Last edited by GChase; 02-26-2013 at 12:19 PM.. |

So easy. There's a DIY on this site with step by step instructions... Enjoy!

I put my phone in the door pull or in the gap for the thigh support on the sport seats.

I did this change last year. YOu can put in a tray with a cover, or there is an open tray that looks like the open tray between the shifter and armrest case (if you don't have the iDrive knob in that place). I went with the open tray. Check the interior parts forum, and you'll probably see a DIY, as well as some threads (maybe including mine with the part number). I think I bought my tray from ECS Tuning, I think they had both the covered and uncovered versions. Very easy swap out. You do lose your 12V lighter point, although I think it's possible to reroute it, or drill a hole in the tray and mount a custom 12V point if you are creative.

Wow!!! Thank you for the replies and links. I do have iDrive. Losing the 12v is not an option. I practically live in this car.

+1. The slot is perfect for an iPhone 4s. I also use the gap in the thigh support, but if others don't have sport seats that isn't an option for them.
