Top speed limiter

Interesting question I came up with this morning:

My 2011 335xi has ZSP with 2BZ wheels (17" style 161). 2011 ordering guide says top speed limiter (840) only comes with ZSP+2S2 wheels (18"). Ran my vin at rubmw.ru and 840 isn't listed.

I would be inclined to believe that even with ZSP, I actually don't have the increased top speed limiter and thus my top speed is 130.

However, on the open road I have personally pushed the car up to 140 on the speedo. What gives??

i wrote it off as speedo error

yup, speedos read high. The increased top speed limiter is actually a result of adding the auxiliary oil cooler in the passenger side wheel well. They normally put this cooler on with the 18" wheels as the tires for the 17" wheels are normally all seasons and not rated to the higher speeds.

If I have a Dinan stage 2 does it remove the limiter? What speed can it go with it?

Just got back from Germany last weekend. Rented a 4-cyl 1-series.

130mph limiter actually kicked in at 127mph (according to GPS).

The new 4 series xDrive says you can't get an increased speed limiter. Do you think the MSport package will increase it?

I installed the Burger delimiter in mine. Prior to that, my limiter kicked in right on schedule.

xDrive models are all limited to 135 according to BMW because the tires "aren't capable of higher speeds" regular i models are 155 with the sport package and 135 w/o.

Increased top speed limiter was part of the m-sport and I think the sport package too.

When I ordered my E91 328IX 2012 while living in Germany. I had to pay $300.00 for the performance tires before I could get the Increased Top Speed limiter, there was no extra charge for the 840. It doesn't do much for me here in the US now but it was so much fun driving and seeing the speedometer at 155mph on the autobahn often. And yes the car drove like it was on rails at that speed!

You can. It is in the specs on line under the 435XI. 130 and 155.

OK you are stupid for doing this on a public road. That being said BMW generally limits the speed based on the tires the car is delivered with.

Might be some other limits for 4X4's or converts but I have not looked into it.

Only thing I would suggest for runs in Mexico on a 135mph limit car get a tune that will up the limit but be sure your tires are good for it. V=149mph & W=168. Pushing H rated tires over 130 would definitely qualify as stupid.

Yep, speed limiter is based on the tires that it came with from the factory. xi with sport package and staggered tires will get the 155 limit. xi with sport package but with just regular tires will still have 130.
