Rocky Mountain Run (Memorial day weekend)
Here we go, let's try this again! I will be good for this summer.
Date: TBD Rain Date: N/A Start time: TBD Distance: +430mi Event Page Added: https://www.facebook.com/events/177746729257655/ Please add yourself to the event if you plan on coming! Participant list (unconfirmed): 1. Evil M *Pending route modifications* Total distance will be over 430 miles. Decided to start up North in Ft. Collins and go South, down to Colorado City. Definitely an all day event. I am working on, and will have a list of each road and a description and checkpoints along the way. This route is E-85 friendly for those of you who use it. Rest/Checkpoints will be established along the route for people who want to meet and drive, or not wanting to drive the full length. Actual stop points still need to be determined. Leave some feedback! I'd like to get some input from everyone so I can decide what days and time will be official. What do you think? Too long/far? Would it be more ideal to travel North to South, or vice versa? Who would be down for this? MAP OVERVIEW *With descriptions under image* CO-165 Description: Good twisty uphill climb with technical high speed corners. Traffic: Low Surface Quality: Average-Good Distance: 32.9 mi CO-96/CO-69 Description: Fun, high speed corners exiting the mountains, transforms into wide open and very scenic. Traffic: Very Low-Moderate Surface Quality: Fair-Average Distance: 46.5 mi US-50 Description: 2-lane highway mountain passage with fast sweeping turns. Traffic: Moderate Surface Quality: Good Distance: 16.5 mi CO-9/ Teller 1 Description: One of my favorites. Very technical but fast with lots of tight areas and elevation change. This road has it all. Traffic: Low-Moderate Surface Quality: Average-Good Distance: 40.2 mi CO-67 Description: Nice fun road to drive, depending on traffic. Cripple Creek attracts a lot of travelers so you often get stuck behind some old person driving 20mph with a line of cars behind them. Traffic: Moderate-High Surface Quality: Good Distance: 18.4 mi CO67/CR126 (Deckers) This long stretch of road is arguably some of the best the east side of the Rockies has to offer. Traffic: Moderate Surface Quality: Fair/Good Distance: 47.6 mi ROUTE BREAKDOWN Poudre Canyon Rd (CO14) - Stove Prairie Rd (CO27) Total Distance: 41 mi Traffic: Low - Moderate Surface Quality: Fair/Good US 34 - Devil's Gulch (CR43) to Estes Park *Fuel/Rest point in Estes Park* Total Distance: 25.4 mi Traffic: Low - Moderate Surface Quality: Fair/Good *There will be a stop in either Granby or Idaho Springs depending on which route we take. CO103 (Squaw Pass)/ CO5 (Mt. Evans) Traffic: Unknown Surface Quality: Newly paved asphalt on majority of CO103; Mt. Evans undetermined. Total Distance: 59.5 mi From here we will continue down 74-73 through Evergreen to 285. Next stop will be the Kum & Go on 285 CR126 - CO67 (Deckers) Total Distance: 57.5 mi Traffic: Moderate Surface Quality: Fair/Good CO-67 to Cripple Creek Total Distance: 19 mi Traffic: Moderate-High Surface Quality: Good More to come...

Unfortunately that weekend is the BMWCCA DS at High Plains Raceway. But I'll pass along the info on your drive!

Looks like a great drive but many of the regulars you might expect for this kind of event will be at the DS that weekend.

Neat proposal!
I enjoy driving US-50 a lot, and CO-67 is pretty fun is little traffic (great views). My only suggestion would be to skip out on going through Winter Park/ Granby (boring roads, longer route) and instead take a more direct and twisty route up through the Peak to Peak Highway (119-->72-->7) and go back to your original route in Estes Park. This route is more secnic, and has tighter, twistier roads. The other nice part is many more people could join in the route if you make checkpoints such as Evergreen, Blackhawk, Nederland, Estes, (people from Boulder, Longmont etc. ) I likely couldn't make the whole route but may consider linking up from Denver to Estes Park.

Thanks for the input. I'll definetly look into it, as this route is not set in stone.
You're talking about RT40/34 the one that is only open seasonally, right? I will probably try to check out those roads this weekend. And yes, I plan on having multiple checkpoints throughout the whole route. What I am trying to do is lay out a time grid for each checkpoint for fueling/rest stops and say for people who may not be able to do the whole run, can meet up at one of the check points and roll from there. So it can be however far/long you want it. I'd like to turn this into an annual thing. I think it would be really cool. Quote:

I would skip going through RMNP too, way slow traffic, unless maybe if you get lucky or manage to go through there very late and right before they close for the night (you're not going through there early based on your route!). Also, Trail Ridge Rd might not even be open yet with sequester cuts/bad weather. I would come down Poudre Canyon/Cameron Pass, but this does add distance. Your route looks like something that should be done in two days. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Camer...n+Pass&t=m&z=9

Yes. Sorry I haven't updated anything lately. It's probably gonna happen on Saturday depending on how the weather has been lately.
Also made a few modifications to the route. We will not go down 70 > 40 > 34. Instead we will make a pit stop before RT 119 and take that up to 72 > 7. Once we get to Estes Park we will decide if we are going to do the rest of the run, it's going to be very long.

Well the little amount of participants I had bailed. So this is nixed.
Will probably reschedule for later in the summer.

Will probably add a route going up Mt. Evans as well. That is an awesome drive. When I first planned these routes, Mt. Evans was closed for road repaving.

Pending the final date I am in! Will also probably bring a couple other BMW friends (Another E90 and an M Coupe).
North to south would be a lot more convenient for me and my friends. Would also be good to have other meet up areas at different areas in the route, incase someone doesn't want to commit to the 400+ miles. |

After thinking about it, we will most likely start up North and head South. We could make the stop atop Mt. Evans for an awesome view with some morning light, that would be amazing.

Does anyone object to driving through Granby, and using 7>72>119 as an alt. route? I've personally never been up through Granby and I think it would be cool. But it is a bit longer to the next ethanol fuel station. Let me know your thoughts please!
