2007.02: How to get map without entering destination?
I just want to see the map while driving without entering a destination. Version 2007.02 - anyone know how to do this? With previous cars (Acura/Lexus) I just entered into the navigation mode and the system showed me the map. Any suggestions?

You can do the same from iDrive "mouse" Press "Menu" button Push joystick to the right for Navigation. Push joystick to select "Navigation" Push joystick twice down to get to "Map direction of Travel"

Strange, but in the new 2007-2 version you can only set it on the right hand screen. On the left screen it shows the information at the bottom but it will not let you scroll down to it. But, the voice command does work for the left screen.
Great information - thanks for the reply! |

And it has nothing to do with what version you are using. The DVD contains only map data. The firmware that controls the functionality of the iDrive is in the car's hardware, not on the DVD.

Activate Voice command and say "Input Map". You will see the Map

Got it! I think the electronics in this car are absolutely the best of ANY car I have ever owned. Without IDrive I would have no idea how they would integrate all this technology. Been playing with IDrive since I got the car Friday night. Overall it is very intuitive.

it takes a little getting used to, but I find the bmw navi much "neater" than the aforementioned Acura / Lexus systems.

The simple voice command "map" will display the map in whatever configuration you last used it.
So if you always use it in direction of travel mode, you don't have to say "map, direction of travel" you can just say "map." Also, for me, the map is what I almost always have on the nav. So pushing the iDrive controller to the right and holding it there for 2 seconds switches to it. I tend to switch back and forth from the map to the entertainment (MP3 CD) screen (pull down on the controller and hold for 2 seconds to get there). I like the "push-hold" shortcuts rather than voice commands for that. YMMV.

Push hold shortcuts? How did you know about these? I'd never heard of them. Also didn't know you could just say "map" to go to the last setting you used. Amazing.

You know how you can push/pull the controller up, down, left, or right to navigate? I don't mean push down on it like a button, and I don't mean spin it. You know, like pushing it to the right to get to the assistance window from the main window. Except don't just push it quickly, you hold it.
Pull the controller in the down direction and hold for 2 seconds, then release. It should switch to the last entertainment screen you used. Now push up and hold for 2 seconds. It will switch to the last communication screen. Push right and hold, it will switch to the last navigation screen. Push left and hold, it will switch to the last ventilation screen. Or whatever's over on the left, I forget. I never go there, so I'm sure it's nothing useful. If it didn't do anything, maybe you didn't hold it in that direction for a full 2 seconds, or maybe you're not doing it as I described? EDIT - here's the page from the manual:

that gets you to general navigation, but if your last navigation screen was not map, it will NOT go to map when you hold for two seconds

you can also just say "map direction of travel" without first saying navigation, or even just "map" (which will take you to the most recent map type).
If i'm in entertainment and i want to see the map i just hit the voice command button and say "map" or i hold the idrive control to the right for 2 seconds since the map was usually the last thing i was looking at.
