Fuel Odour
Just curious have any of you N54 owner struck an unburnt fuel smell when sitting at the lights?
I filled up last week with optimax, and have been noticing when the windows are down i get a fuel vapour smell (the same odour you get when re-fuelling not exhaust related odur). When I popped the hood and had a look near the HPFP there was no signs of a fuel leak and no odour but when i got near the fuel cap (yes the cap was tight) I can smell fuel. I believe you can change the charcoal canister (vapour removal canister) bmw part # 16137163596 http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Site...63596/ES37275/ Has anyone experienced this issue and how did you rectify it? (also when I'm refuelling and i get the 'click' for full i dont keep filling as i have heard you can 'wet' this filter and damage it?) I checked my fuel economy and she's sitting @ 11.5L 100, so I don't believe its a fuel leak (generally im in the 12's when driving around town) |

I haven't experienced this, but maybe worth a post in the general US section as you'd get more replies there.
I'm in the 13's/100kms.... I must be very lead footed compared to what people are getting! Lol |

I have not experienced this either. Maybe a fuel line or clamp issue? It must be more than just a small leak/vapour escape if you can actually smell it sitting in the car!

It could be your DMTL (diagnosis module tank leakage). Although I've since discovered that Aussie (and Euro) cars may not even have them.
They detect leaks in the fuel tank by pressurising the tank. From what I can gather they tend to go bad when people overfill their tanks (to the brim) and fuel goes down into the sensor at the top of the fuel filler. It could be that yours (if you even have one!) could be venting vapour into the atmosphere? A few threads: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260065 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...19&hg=16&fg=10 OR - I could just be giving you a complete bum steer! As per the above thread, they usually throw codes when they go bad. |

Shane, Has this happened only recently?? I know that the smell only happens initially when I got the DP but after that nothing.

Well last night when i got home i undid the fuel cap for a minute to relieve any pressure & popped the hood to look for any signs of a fuel leak, then refastened the fuel cap.
Today there has been no odour, but the ambient air temp is 15 degrees cooler. Perhaps this hot weather is related to the fuel smell/issue? I have had catless DP's in for nearly 12 months now, its not an exhaust fuel odour its the same odour you get when filling up at the servo (DP's have nothing to do with it AFAIK) |

Yeah have had a tune for 12 months also, I don't believe its a running rich odour (I'm familiar with that scent after being in a few 500HP+ R34's and a 1000HP 2JZ etc) and my fuel economy is quite good... (I recall I was in the 12's a few months ago- I don't drive my car much)

Don't want to point out the obvious, but could you have just split some fuel inside the cap recess area when filling up?

I have read in the past guys having fuel odour issues when their injectors were leaking, but those guys also had rough idles and starting issues. (my car starts fine and idles great)

when i first bought my car it started and went well... but on inspection one of the injectors was dead.. needed to be changed.. i didn't notice a fuel smell but i didn't notice and hard starting while that injector was gone. could be the issue.

You would know if it was an injector issue, and not from the smell!! Trust me!!

Well since I loosened the fuel cap last week and left it off for 30 mins or so before re torquing (i was thinking to relieve any built up pressure) i haven't had the fuel smell re-occur.
The past few days have been quite warm in the mid 30's and its been fine, so i either had a pressure issue or the cap wasn't torqued enough initially |
