4B05 Fault Code

About a week ago SES light came on and found 4B05 code (Zero-quantity adaptation, injector, cylinder 4). Cleared code with CAN tool and hasn't thrown another since (after about 300 miles). Really expected to see another code thrown shortly thereafter given some of the threads I've seen related to injectors, carbon buildup, etc. Vehicle has approximately 47K miles on it.

Thoughts? Just a random event or has anyone else experienced this kind of lag between codes?

Start with DDE replacement before any other component. Of course the dealer will tell you it's the injectors.

My 2010 is at the dealer right now. Also 47k miles. Replacing injector in cylinder 3. It was stumbling at idle but no ses light. Guess I'm in for a long journey. Thank god it's CPO.

Under warranty, I can't call the shots, I'm just along for the ride until they finally throw in the towel and replace DDE.

Side note, 328xi m sport loaner. Not a fan.

Exactly. The shots are being called by BMW Engineering. The dealerships will do whatever it takes for them to get paid by BMW NA; that is their No. 1 priority. If dealerships start following their own anlysis for such expensive+complex issues, BMW NA can refuse to pay them.

As stated before, maybe BMW Engineering did fix this issue (carbon build up)with the release of the updated EGR valve and strategy (DDE software) update released in 2012. No one after the updated reported reoccuring issues...or maybe they did not drive enough.

As far as the DDE failing...no one knows why except BMW Engineering. Not sure what is causing the DDE to fail or what component(s) in the DDE is failing.

Don't expect the believe what the SA's or even shop foreman tells you, frankly some of them just blow smoke up our ass.

Agree with you 135 vs.

I just spoke with my trusted SA this afternoon. It is soot buildup causing my drivability issues. On Monday they need to reach out to BMW NA to find out how best to proceed. Looks like they will have it a long time.

As reference, mine is a 2010 with 47k miles.

For any future readers, be aware that zero quantity adaptation injector errors can be caused by outdated SW on the DME/DDE. I have updated my DDE with WinPKF and before I had all of them 4af5, 4b05, 4ae5, 4ad5 even to a level that on the German highway it would go into the motor emergency mode. Now with the updated software all problems are gone. No errors anymore.
