Speed camera on the M25
So they have these flashing cameras since they've taken off the yellow ones as the motorway defaults back to 70.
Was driving back from Heathrow last night approaching Clacket Lane services and I get two flashes from behind me. Turns out there are these "stealth" cameras around there. My question is are these defaulted to the old 50 mph limit? I ask because I know I was doing below 70 but was in a small stretch of 50mph (electronically signposted at 12am for no apparent reason). Are these new cameras clever enough to differentiate a 70 and then a temporary 50 mph zone? Seen these flash a total of 4 times (on other drivers, not on me!) without fail firstly going past them and going after them so it's not uncommon. Anyone had any experiences? |

The whole point of these cameras is to enforce variable speed limits so they are smart enough to operate according to what the electronic speed limit sign shows. Apologies if this is blindingly obvious, speed limits are only enforceable if they are surrounded by a red circle. If the sign just shows a number you cannot be prosecuted for exceeding it.

The signs did have red circles but were up for no real reason (e.g. roadworks, collision etc). It was 12am and me being on cruise control at 70 as the M25 is back at 70mph reacting too late for this random 50 zone will most likely be costly. It just seems like the government in this instance are taking advantage of drivers by putting up random 50 zones around these smart cameras to catch drivers unaware. Like I said I'm not the first to get flashed here. This means I was effectively doing 70 in a 50 ![]() |

Was this camera on top of the gantry or on a pole at the side of the carriageway on the hard shoulder?

There is hope. I was no where near as bad as these guys though mine did have a 50 mph limit going at the time. Another quote "I saw these operational on the M25 travelling to/from brussels this weekend. They were flashing so much I couldn't believe it. I was stuck in traffic on opposite carriageway and must of seen 50 people get caught in approx. 10 minutes." |

im sure these cameras are only there to raise cash and judging by the times they flash they will pay for the roadworks in 12 months! the cameras are on 2 gantries, there is one camera each side not in the middle so you cannot see them, doing all 4 lanes.

I haven't got a problem when they're enforcing a "variable" speed limit. It's when the normal 70mph speed limit is in place....I'd like to know if they're active then and if so, whether the 10%+2 tolerance applies.

This is my current situation. It was a 70 and I guess I got flashed in the 50.

Was travelling Northbound on the M25 past heathrow and the amount of flashes I seen was unreal either people were speeding or the cameras were set with tight speeding tolerances
Easily flashed more than 8cars ..... That's £800 in a matter of minutes |

Just renewing this thread to gloat
![]() Seen these flashing so much everytime I run the stretch. Must be something up with the calibration. Getting flashed in a digitally posted 50 zone at 12 in the morning travelling at 70 would of seemed a bit harsh. Moral of the story, be safe. Last edited by BMW325iE90; 06-15-2014 at 05:58 AM.. |
