I happened to have changed my filter last Saturday. I just unfolded the stock paper filter - it's 23 feet long! about 9" wide (I can measure the taper later). I'd be really, really surprised if the typical aftermarket cone filter came to even half that area.
Cotton K&N filters flow much better than stock paper air filters and Im sure your right, K&N filters let a ton of dirt in your engine, that's why their so popular.....
