Great news about the turbo upgrade. I am thinking about picking up a N54 135i and based on Robert's post 173 would you be willing to offer some kind of warranty protection in the event of engine damage due to the tune/turbo upgrade?

I am sure the competition does not offer this and could be a great incentive when looking at such a significant increase in power.

Sorry if this is a dumb question and thanks!

I doubt any company is willing to warranty a 600WHP aftermarket turbo single setup. Best thing you can do is set enough money aside in case something happens. If your looking for warranty, stay stock, or stay with a conservative tune like Dinan and their modifications.

Anyway I agree pushing rev limits esp on straight 6 with more than 2X stock HP is NOT advised.
Wrong. Poor spec bearing shells was the S54B32 issue, not crankshaft design. Stock S50B32 revs to 7600 RPM and S54B32 to 8000 RPM without issue.

That's a quick search but there are plenty more. You in Australia, call up Matt@haltech and ask him if they weren't tuning a Tomei RB28 that they revved to 12,000rpm. Anyways this is OT so I'll leave it at that.

Yeah, I'm a little pessimistic about the N54 being the "new 2JZ", but hey, I'm confident we'll get another 100-200HP from these engines without too much effort. The problem I see with huge power is that people will get tired of the N54, and there won't be enough market after another 2-4 years. The Supra MkIV was around for a while (10 years), while the N54 has been in use from 2006 production to 2011 - half the time - and a completely different demographic. Same goes for the S38 (M5/M6 engines from 87-95) - massive power potential, but not the right customer base where enough people wanted 600/800/1000+ HP except maybe in Sweden where it's dark for 3-6 months a year . There are others here and on other forums with 600+ HP daily driver S52 powered E36s. CardCounter in MD put down 700 RWHP on a stock M52B28 (E36 328i) bottom end before a rod bent. The power in BMW engines is available, very good cylinder heads, variable or two-step valve timing, strong bottom end, etc.

I think the N54 will be the 2JZ's little brother - nearly as good but not quite going to put down the massive dyno queen numbers its older "brother" did.

But not to derail the thread any further - I think Vishnu will sell a lot of single turbo setups in the next 2-3 years, then have to move on to newer and better things. I applaud anyone who is taking the time, spending the money and effort to develop such projects. It's definitely a labor of love. Oh, and sign me up to be an East Coast installer!

We are already working on the next stage of development which should result in another similar sized leap in N54 performance. But that is for later in the year.

The ERF turbos still aren't available in quantity or without super long lead times. I think BW's involvement in Champ Car is to blame for their several month long backlogs. But I can't say that I'm disappointed with this situation given how well our current turbo choice is working.

Shiv
100% agreed on the EFR's being difficult to come by. Full Race has been promising a kit for the Evo X that's been "almost ready" for about 18 months now, but they cant sell it due to lack of supply!

Can you spill the beans on the turbo used in your testing? Or at least the make/line? You mentioned that you'll be trying a billet wheel soon, which suggests that the turbo choice for the first round of testing wasn't using a top-shelf snail. Ball our journal bearing? As impressive as the resulst are, I'm just trying to get a feel for how much more potential there is through refining parts selection.

Oh, and about spool time and the torque curve - are you allowing the turbo to spool as quickly as possible, of have you intentionally limited the rate of boost build-up to keep the torque curve flat in an effort to protect the engine/drivetrain? Again, just wondering how much more potential there is (with the obvious added risk of breaking stuff!)

Thanks!

Almost positive he's using a PTE 6765 or a 6265.

Why is it thought that the XI's transfer cases aren't goign to handle more than 450wtq?

We are using a Precision turbo. But our turbo was manufactured just before they released the CEA option. It's still a very modern ball bearing design but turbo technology changes quickly it seems.

We are allowing boost to spool up as soon as possible. We are doing nothing to get it the way of that. The only thing we do is moderate the boost target so that it doesn't run the full max boost from ~3500RPM on up as that would be unnecessary stressful on the drivetrain. Not to mention causing some serious traction limitations.

I talked to Drew (DLSJ5 on this forum) and he should have his car (supercharged m3 w/DCT) up and running any day now. I'd say he would be a good person to talk to. Other than that, I don't know of anyone else. I'm interested as well because our n55 135 needs upgraded clutch packs desperately. No sense in doing a big single turbo conversion on that car until something is available.

Awesome job on the single, I have been watching the outcome daily. You may have answered this already but when do you expect the kit to be available for purchase for people who are not near your shop? My turbos are smoking like chimneys and need a replacement.

We will be releasing the kit to the East Coast that is for sure. We have many interest coming from the East Coast. There are many shops that are familiar with our Procede system that we will feel comfortable to have the kit installed. Please send me an email or pm me and I will go over some options with you and possibly work with one of our vendors out East to get this done.

Cheers

Shiv, how about ALS for occasional needs for quick low end response? E.g. By bypassing charge air to exhaust manifold? There are many ways to develop a refined Anti-Lag System. It would be just a natural continuom to your 2-step.

oh i dont know about this, guys. it sounds dangerous to make cars go this fast. i mean, if bmw would have wanted us to go this fast they would have included it from the factory. not to mention that this may even void the warranty! i, for one, will be sitting this one out.
