i have always figured the opposite of that, because the diesels have higher torque ratings in the lower rev range and therefore can pull away from the line faster than most petrols (that have their power peak in the higher rev range). once the petrols spool up, they can burst & pull through the gears towards terminal velocity much quicker than the diesels, which have their output advantage fade as they spin up.

Having driven some Quick petrol cars I've always been gobsmacked how quick diesels are off the line. However, for me, where they also seem to have the edge is the in the 50-80 sprint range. Esp these BMW diesel engines!

Got another question for you, how are you getting on with the 'stop/start' of the engine when pulling up to lights etc. Does it annoy or do you just get used to it? Can it be turned off using iDrive or a switch in the car? I know this is bypassing some of the efficiency that BMW has built into the car but I fear it may annoy me too much to have it on all the time.

I've had that on my e92 and on my F10. You can switch it off but I don't see the point. It works so quickly and seamlessly that it doesn't intrude. If you can see you're only stopping very briefly then it won't turn off if you keep it in gear or have the clutch depressed. I think it's a good idea.

As xenon points out, it's not an automatic thing. To be honest I wasn't sure how it worked either but you do have to take the car out of gear and let your foot off the clutch. I don't use it very often. If I do it's at eg light sequences where I know I'll be stood waiting. It doesn't seem to be a very advanced version of stop/start compared to other cars I've driven.

And there's a button on the dash to disable it entirely.

Have you tried P 21S wax? It's highly thought of and a fraction of the price of Swissvax.

I've been using Dodo Juice Purple Haze Pro. It's a soft wax, apply it by hand then buff off. It's very good but not cheap

Do you agree with that or is that the ramblings of car detailers taking it too far/seriously? I do find that I have to take some of the reviews and advice on those forums with a pinch of salt sometimes as the act of cleaning the car can end up like witchcraft - you must begin washing with the first light of the morning and sacrifice the neighbours first born in order to for the snow foam lance to be blessed - then the unicorn jizz wax can be applied using the secret motion (anti clockwise if the 3rd planet is not in line) on the panels while incanting the ingredients list in low tones.

That's obviously in jest and I do agree with their two bucket method but sometimes I just get confused on those websites, who would have known there were so many products to choose from!

You're not far off. I'm amazed by how quickly things fall in and out of favour especially on DW. I was obsessed with my Audi and then I had a Saab for 3 years which only ever got a Bosnian once over. Now I'm in another car I'm bothered about it's all change.

I would agree that it probably lasts a month or so. But tbh it's so easy to apply that I've never considered that to be a problem.
