Nice someone got one...

So its finally installed and I've got videos and pictures. Overall it went well and I'm happy. I'll post the videos and details of my install sometime tomorrow (Monday) so we can finally have some great input. I'm also glad my DLSR didn't fall down when recording the exh lol!

Thumbs up Finally Solved

BMW SCORPION EXHAUST INSTALL, RESPONSE, HELPFUL GUIDE:

First part is mainly me giving advice on what I think, this will be followed by pictures and videos (on follow-up post) that I recorded. I purchased the exhaust from Bavarian Autosports. Exhaust installed by Tim's Custom Exhaust in the Twin Cities, MN.

Also here is the link to my webpage if you can't read it clearly here: https://endagtr.wordpress.com/wp-adm...=6&postpost=v2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PREVIOUS ENGINE MODS:

CDV- extreme help with better clutch engagement (for M/T)
AFE Stage 2 – more air, more engine noise in cabin (during 2800+ rpms)

NEW MOD:
1. Scorpion Exhaust (Wanted more engine noise/response/better flow):

a. Pros
• Adds a needed/wanted grunt to the car.
• Very subtle back fire (once broken in should sound a lot better; reminds me of the E46 M3’s meisterschaft exhaust).

• Moderate performance increase.
• Increased engine noise and response for M/T drivers.
• Improved flow.

b. Cons
• Cutting exhaust since it’s not a cat back (if you have warranty I would suggest getting a cat back): this means from the cats that are located at headers, not the secondary cats.
• You feel your car yearning for more; the Germans built a performance engine, but definitely held it back. It’s an engine that had potential, but was told she can’t get anywhere with a flat chest, unlike her N54 sister who had tig ol’bittys’.
• BMW did a good job keeping their cabins quiet, especially exhaust noise....so headers can help with that

c. Recommend
• Get a throttle tune or Re-Map because you’ll be so frustrated on how the stock ecu maps are holding back the car (if you weren’t already disappointed in the beginning). If you are going to get a re-map make sure you aren’t installing the 330i performance manifold in the near future (< 1 year) since you might have to have it re-mapped again. Also the M-tech rear bumper would match this exhaust nicely.

2. Paths you can take with Scorpion Exhaust

a. Cut and attach before the secondary cats (you’ll need to cut the aftermarket mid pipe and stock exhaust system) ((first picture below))
b. Take off whole exhaust and construct piping that will go from scorpion mid-pipe to headers. (so basically a full catback.)
c. Only install muffler (for those who want a different performance muffler)
d. Whatever custom work you want to do?

What to expect:
Overall the exhaust should fit from the muffler towards the mid pipes, however on the stock exhaust the piping with the resonator is slightly dented on the top to prevent the exhaust from pressing on the heat shield that protects the driveshaft. If the exhaust presses on this, you will hear the weights on the drive shaft hit the heat shield. This can be easily fixed in a couple of different ways: 1) denting new exhaust in similar manor as stock exhaust, 2) “shift/dent/move” the heat shield slightly lower so it isn’t coming into contact with the driveshaft, 3) use your judgment on how to approach it, I’m probably making it sound more difficult than it is.

This is one of the better reviews I've seen here on e90

So, just to confirm how you got this to fit

You *Cut and attach before the secondary cats (you’ll need to cut mid pipe and stock)* essentially replicating BMW PE Exhaust

Some additional questions
  1. Do you have any drone? 2500-3500 rpm cruising speed?
  2. In the pictures it appears that the pipes that attach after/before the secondary cats appear to be smaller than stock? I assume that's just angle of the picture
  3. Is the exhaust stainless? or mild steel?
  4. How is the quality of the welds?

Q1: No drone with my set up. i'm assuming drone is too much muffler vibration and buzzing inside the cockpit that you can barely hear yourself. Exhaust noise in cabin is quiet and the insulation on BMW's is the cause...hence all the M cars having electronically recorded acoustics of the engine directed in the cabin.

Q2: they are larger than stock

Q3: stainless

Q4: welds look fine to me. the muffler hanger brackets are thin, but welds seem good to me (no experience in welding).

A nice, subtle sound! A bit too quiet for my tastes, but should fit the needs of a good bit, I'd say!

Yea I'm looking into replacing the primarycats/headers to get that right pitch, but I'm going to wait until the exhaust is broken in all the way, or just remove the resonator.

True I agree with that too, but I think new headers will fix this. Waiting for Active Autowerke to get the headers completed for the N51/N52s so I don't have to pay $100,000 for AFE or SuperSprints mega-expensive headers.

It is $367 at bav auto if I'm not mistaken. That's a pretty Damn good price even if it needs to be reworked a bit. I really need a welder at home, I have 4 at work but need to go in on a weekend.

Yea, it is. Total should be around $435 if free shipping isn't given anymore. That's a steal for sure......total with my exhaust shop doing the simple mods was around $500, which is a great deal, and the quality and weight of the exhaust is acceptable/good/not-an-ebay-cheapo!

You can definitely stay within a range of $390-700 depending on the shop or how good of a DIY you are. No welding is needed either, unless you want other custom work.

Bottom line up front, would you recommend this exhaust?

Since I sold my Active Autowerk exhaust I have been kicking around the idea of buying this once. Mostly, because it's on sale.

I would recommend it. It might be a bit quieter than your active autowerke, but that can be fixed by deleting the resonator that's before the muffler, just as the BMW performance exhaust has done. My next plan is to get the active autowerke straight pipes to delete the "secondary cats".

Otherwise I'm loving it, no complaints so far. Quiet/Loud enough in the low rpms, but you defintely feel/hear it when hard at throttle or around 3K+ rpms! Much louder now since its finally broken in too.

edit: Plus since Scorpion was meant for Euro models it should sound a lot better if the secondary cats are replaced with straight pipes, this is my next plan.

Any chance you'd know how this compares to the volume of the PE...? I just removed my AA muffler a few weeks ago due to the infamous drone, but I'm missing that same volume level with the PE muffler I installed (used a Magnaflow Y-pipe to delete the stock resonator). If I'd remembered this thread, I probably would've bought one to try out the muffler. Suppose I still could, though!
