Replacing Brake Pads

Hi All

Well its time for me to change my front pads and i was just wondering if we are able to do it ourselves? If so does anyone have links to a guide on how to replace them?

Also I was quoted $110 for front pads. The brand was Lucas and was recommended. Is this a decent price??

Thanks

You need to check if your rotors are still within the thickness specs, if not you'll need to replace them. If your doing it yourself I'd recommend some high temp paint on the part between the rotor surface and the hub where your wheel mounts as they tend to go rusty over time.

Also if your car is showing a warning light then you'll need to change the sensor as well. I've tried cheapo ones and they just caused me problems and wound up spending the extra $ to get a genuine BMW sensor.

As far as changing the pads it isn't hard, however think about the fact that the brakes are pretty important function wise so if your not 100% certain on what your doing the cost of having a professional do it is money well spent IMHO. Tools wise you'll need a caliper spreader, couple of torx sockets, anti squeel spray and some brake fluid in case you need to add some.

i post my front brake forum a month ago

you need to get a new sensor and a pair of brake pad,

rotor is not ready to replace yet if you are on E90.i mean most of them

i can get you a local shop in the burwood area. cost you $55 dallars labour fee, plus $ 20 to reset the warning light, you can watch him to do it,pick up your car in an hour,

also i buy my front brake in Auto one in Kendington, cost $130. made in germany i forgot the name of it,

bring it to Bmw dealer and costs you 3 times of price, but good thing is and they

offer a cup of coffee and rantal car

good luck

Thanks for the info guys

I guess i'll get it professionally done.

Does anyone know how much it will set me back to change my front and rear pads and also front discs?

A place near my work has quoted me $870 to change the front and rear pads and front discs but that price doesnt include labour. I think labour was rought $70 an hour. Im not sure if im getting ripped, so any info will be appreciated.

Mechanically it's fairly straight forward to do it yourself. However you need a compatible odbII software to reset the computer.

On my first E90, I had the front pads, rotors and sensor done as well as the rear pads. Brisbane BMW charged me a total of less than $880. Close to $300 was the rotors alone so I think what you might save from getting the job done by a non specialist is chump change.

well i gave Canterbury BMW a call today and they quoted me $450 for the front pads and I would have to add another $550 for the front rotors. If i wanted the rear pads done as well i needed to add $470 and if i wanted the rear rotors done it would be an additional $450. So if i wanted all brakes pads and rotors changed it would cost close to $2000

so at the moment the european specialist seems to be the way to go hehehe coz its a bit more then chump change lol

I got quoted much higher prices than what I actually paid. $2000 is OTT.

I have a quote for $550 for front brake pads from my dealer that includes pads and installation charges, they said that's what's going to show next on the condition based service indicator after about 11,000kms. Anyone's done it from the non dealership Be ems Hornsby, what price?

IIRC you can reset the brake countdown thing on the CBS through the car itself and don't require an OBDII software. I reset my oil change indicator on my E92 and i am sure that there is the brake pad reset there too.

I had my rear pads and brake fluid replaced last week. $316 from a local workshop and the oem pads don't need bedding, just PnP

Press the caliper piston back into the housing.
Install the new pads into the caliper in reverse of how they were removed. If you have shims you will need to spray anti-squeak lubricant on the back before installation.
Install the caliper back onto the brake rotor and torque the caliper bolts to the manufacture specification. Press the brake pedal to move the piston outward.

My car is about out of warranty, so the service rep was trying to sell me the maintenance plan. On there, he quoted me $1600. I will be doing it myself for that kind of money.

maintenance plan does not include Brakes, oil
They are wear and tear items so not covered.
Only normal servicing costs are included.
Correct me if i am wrong

so is maintenance plan different from service plan.
I have a service plan with BMW and they have advised that oil filter is not covered, same as brakes
I can get my oil topped up for no charge under this agreement

Go to Euro-Aus Auto Mechanic if you can - in Capalaba, Brisbane. They did my 320i front rotor and pads, rear pads, all sensors for $690. All OEM parts and the price includes labour.
