Found a place that sells auto tranny fluid & filter
For those of you who are planning to change the ATF and filter, I just ordered the fluids, filter, and drain plug at www.rmeuropean.com
They sell the atf equivalent to the shell m.1375.4 and transmission filter kit. 83-22-0-142-516 ATF Auto Transmission Fluid (1 Liter) Equivalent to: Shell M-1375.4 $16.07 for each liter (bought 7 liters for a total $112.49) chances are you probably only need 5 liters - I bought 2 extra liters just in case, and to get the free delivery discount. 24-11-7-571-217 Transmission Filter Kit for Automatic Trans GA6HP19Z Contains: (1) Oil Pan with Filter (1) Oil Pan Gasket (1) O-Ring (1) Screw Plug $142.77 24-11-7-520-713 Transmission Drain Plug (For Automatic Trans) $4.92 Total parts came out to $260.18 plus 3 day delivery with fedex is free when you purchase a min of $250. Thought I share just in case someone has a hard time finding these parts. I plan to pay separately for labor to my mechanic who will work on my car. Last edited by e90will; 06-09-2009 at 08:25 PM.. |

I have 81K and this is the first time having the tranny serviced so I'm trying to stay on top w/ maintaining the car. I wasn't sure if the drain plug is reuseable or not, I just bought it because it was cheap. I will try to get some pictures, but I don't know if I can since my mechanic will be working on the car. I'll try tough |

Gino, If your planning to do a change at 50K, I would just change the tranny fluid only and I would wait until 100K to do a complete fluid & filter change. That would financially be more feasible. On the other hand, it's up to you. |

Great find! Why a new pan? Is it necessary for the filter change? I'm shocked the pan is resin- fragile and doesn't disappate heat well! Is the new pan resin too, or is it aluminum?
Something I've been concerned with is how the tranny is filled. Being "lifetime", I'm worried that the fill point may be inaccessible without dropping the transmission. Let us know if your mechanic encountered any difficulties, please. I heard Mercedes is recommending a one-time change at 42k miles, and then leaving it in. Makes sense...get all the break-in gunk out of there. If I decide to keep this car long-term, I'll definitely change the fluid at 40 to 60k miles. $3-400, but I imagine a new transmission would be $10k, so it'd be nice to make it last a long time (although, eventually salvaged trannyw will become available.) |

carve, i'm not exactly sure if the pan is plastic resin or some alloy; tried to tap it but can't exactly tell from the sound. e90will's mechanic can probably confirm that. Thanks e90will and good luck on your tranny oil change. Please do not forget to post your mechanic's or your experience during the change. I will also buy the drain plug as an insurance since it's cheap anyway. thanks again.

carve, I think it's better to loosen the fill plug first before draining so you'll know that you can fill it up with the new oil. If you drain the oil first and for some reason you cannot open the fill plug, then you're screwed or will have to drop the pan.

BLK07335I, i've attached fill plug picture with red arrow. you might want to wait for e90will to confirm this when his mechanic performs the trans oil change. i'm not sure if it's the same for 335i.

when changing the fluid..you never actually get it all out...but you will get more than enough out to accomplish what your trying to do. as for the fluid-the e90s use the same fluid. the pan is plastic, and the new pan comes with the drain plug in it so you wont need a new one...

So, was a whole new pan really needed? You can drain by removing it if there's no plug, and there's a fill port, so it seems like you should only need a new filter and gasket.
