BMW Performance Intake Question

Hi Everyone,

Recently installed the BMW Performance Intake, noticed it wasn't too much louder than stock - I did follow the excellent DIY on here, but it still seems kind of quiet. I'll be installing the BMW PE this weekend, but wanted some thoughts as to whether this is normal or not. Install was easy, and thankfully had no extra parts leftover (had a few too many Ikea experiences to count).

Normal. The intake gives perhaps a 10% increase in induction noise. The car goes from zero induction noise to barely audible.

True, eurobox would've been better.

Do they have a euro version 'performance' intake? Or just regular euro version?

I think you would need to buy both the euro intake & performance intake if you don't already have the Euro one. Only the front half of the filter box is replaced, see below. Try doing a search though, I'm sure someone has asked the question before

The only issue is fitment between the eurobox and OEM perf. intake.
The carbon fiber cover may not fit the eurobox intake filter cover.

^^^ This image shows e90 BMP intake

I have a strange feeling that the lid & snorkel of the USA BMP box will fit Euro box.
I will do some research. ( Update:: 2-3 of the bolt holes do not line up)

Here is a 130i thread that says you get 17% more air flow from snorkel: http://babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=18833

Other alternative, make the Perf. intake into a DJ APEX intake and carbon fiber wrap with clear coat the rest of the covers.

I can already tell you with 100% certainty that the PI cf upper snorkel will NOT match/fit up to the Euro airbox - it is a larger size/different shape at the exit end that mates to airbox.

Euro airbox uses standard upper snorkel and matches the size/shape of it's exit end

And the PI airbox lid will NOT fit the Euro box either.

Adding a better flowing air intake is mainly to result in better breathing - not more noise. If you want noise, just rip the whole thing off and stick a cone filter on end of intake duct.

Personally I have/like the Euro box over the PI as it's design makes it so much easier to replace filter - just take off lid to replace. The PI still uses the 2-pc configuration so now you have to remove the lid, pull the entire airbox out of the car, & take the halves apart to access the filter.

Plus Euro round filter has more filtration surface area (hence higher flow capacity) than the flat style filter used in PI.

And the PI still retains the charcoal filter (unless you have hacked it out) for a little more flow restriction, while the Euro has none.

I've had both (have Euro now) and in truth any performance gains on a NA car are negligible - at most I could feel a slight better throttle response...

So they do not have a performance intake at all sold in europe? I was hoping europe had a 'Performance' intake also that you could pair with teh euro airbox but that doesn't look to be the case.

SO BMW has 3 intakes for the n52..? US Stock, US PI, and Euro Stock..?

Euro intake would be nice but 400 bucks for such a small performance/convenience gain is a bit much. Performance intake looks great but again, way overpriced for my budget.

And this real OEM shows e90 BMP euro version intake

Do you have a part number? Source? Would the euro performance intake fit US N52? im assuming it is the same?

Parts needed would be Euro Performance intake, and stock euro air box which can be bought from ECS. Where can the euro performance intake be purchased from?

google the part number & see what shows up. I imagine ebay and bmwmini carparts co.uk are just 2 sources.

Tischer can not order Euro Parts - you would need to contact ECSTuning and see if they can get the Performance Euro box as they seem to be able to get Euro parts, or search for a different source.

I'm sure the cost will be more than the $400+ they currently charge for the standard Euro box though.

Lowered cost of the standard Euro box over cost of US PI is one of the main reasons people go with the Euro box.

Other difference with the Euro PI over standard Euro is the slightly larger CF Upper Snorkel & additional rear intake snout

You would have to weigh the xtra cost (if they can even get it) of these features over just getting the US PI. Personally, I don't think that xtra intake snout does much of anything, & the CF is cosmetic.

Of course, the Euro box of either type would still have the benefit of easier filter changes due to how it's constructed over US PI...

I contacted ECSTuning today to see if they could get the Euro Performance Air Intake System (#13 72 0 444 750) and if so, pricing...

I'll report back as to the results
