E85 causes clogged fuel filter?
Hi guys.
-About changing from petrol to Ethanol- Back when I was driving and tuning my Saab, the guys at the Saab forum said that it is important to change the fuel filter after the first fill of E85. This was because of a lot of crap in the fuel tank would be dissolved by the E85 and clog up the fuel filter. This would seriusly impact on the fuel flow. Therefore it was recommended to change to a new fuel filter after the first full tank of E85. If that was true, then it might still be a problem with our BMWs? Right? Best Regards |

Yeah it has been pointed out before.
Biggest issue with e85 is actualy that it clogges the filters in the injectors. Siemens stated that this can happen when the injectors reach 100 degrees celcius and is in contact with ethanol. IMpact: E85 user might need to changes injectors more often.

It's too early to say what issues will happen to the car with prolong usage of E85. I am this close to trying it out myself 30/70 mix of some sort but waiting to summer time to try it.

I think 2 different issues are being confused here. There was a post awhile ago by DFV2 that he spoke to a conti engineer and they said the issue Rismo mentioned was a concern. No one has ever had that issue with well over a million miles on thousands of N54s for at least three years on some of those cars. So basicly it is a non issue.
THe other issue that the SAAB guys brought up is a legit issue for older cars. The SAAB turbo guys have been running E85 for close to ten years like every other platform except ours apparently. So they have gotten past all the myths and rumors our platform is still plagued with. E85 is a much better solvent then gas which means it will pick up anything in your fuel system where as gasoline leaves water/dirt to collect at the bottom of your tank. Once you start to use E85, the E85 will pick up that debri and transport it to your fuel filter possilbly reducing your flow. This isn't much of an issue in our 5 year old cars like it is in a 10-20 year old car. So no need to buy new injectors. Just watch your STFT which you should be doing anyway after doing something dramatic as switching fuels. If its way high out of spec talk to your tune provider and figure it out. It could be one of several things. Good luck and I'm sure you're going to love running it! |

Here is some info on users using E85 I have been running E85 since beginning of summer. 20% E85 pump to September and since then E50 on a pro tune. No issues yet, winter blends so far so good.

I've been running E85 blends (both 3 & 6 gallons blends in a full tank of 93). The most important thing is making sure you consistently stay within the fuel trims.
I'd recommend that you use Duralube products every so often, specifically their Flex Fuel Enhancer and Direct Injection System Cleaner. Here's the website so you know what to look for (https://www.duralube.com/Products.aspx), I was able to buy it in Walmart. |
