New Dealer- New Clutch

okay - after newport sytner gave me the runaround and would only inspect with me being responsible for the cost -

i took the car to cardiff sytner exactly the same procedure test drive with technician who agreed about the judder (only on hill start).

service guy booked my car in for inspection with no cost to me .

2 working days later new clutch/flywheel under waranty!!!!!

the car drives like new great clutch point and absoloutly no judder. i am so pleased what a fantastic car.

not sure what is going on with newport bmw ( they have been good in the past) however cardiff were spot on - great work.

so the new clutch/ flywheel combo is a fix-. if at first you don't succeed just try another dealer -. no hasle no cost .

thanks for a great thread guys - john

Thought I would update on my experience on this clutch issue.

Mine is a 330d, which has now just had its 4th clutch in 18,000 miles. The new clutch BMW brought out is for 4 cylinder cars only. Which is of no use to me.

Given that the car is out of warranty in a couple of months, I was very concerned about the prospect of paying for a new clutch every 6,000 miles. . . Following a call and discussion with BMW Customer Services they have agreed to warranty the clutch for another 24 months, after which they will review again and if its still an issue extend it again. I guess, as its a bit of a limited product (330d in manual form as opposed to linked to an auto unit) the likelihood of a new design is slim.

So - not a fix but a way forward. (Not ideal though and a bit of pain in the backside.)

Do like the car though and don't want to change at the moment.

The Judder

Afternoon people
I know it’s an ongoing sager that I was hoping I wasn’t going to join in with but yesterday my car did it, the judder, the first time pulling out of a busy junction., it did it all day and started to wind me up, by the end of the day in was raining heavy and pulling from every junction I spun my 18”.
Drove it again today to do some shopping with the other half and the car was fine, not a judder knock or anything .Was just wondering if this is normal behaviour when the clutch starts to go or is it just me.

Mine would do it cold or warm, wet or dry!!

Just as a footnote to johngg's experience, mine was done recently by Newport so they are aware of the "fix". Having said that, the first time I took it there and left the car with them, they couldn't find a fault...

Chandlers Brighton have been great, bought an AUC november last year, an 06 320D M Sport, experienced a lot of judder, spoke to the service dept about the problem but they wanted me to commit close to £600 to investigate it, they were unsure if the judder was due to wear or a mechanical fault, was not happy and walked away, presued this further through Danielle the Service manager, she was top class, my car now has a new clutch/flywheel at no cost to me, this is what you pay the extra money for, happy with my decision about buying my car from the dealers :-), will collect the car this weekend, will try and get the part numbers if I can, cheers guys

I bought my AUC 2006 320D in August 2009 and by Feb i had realised that the clutch judder wasn't my fault, it was defo the car. Bowker Preston had the car in and diagnosed failed clutch and flywheel and both replaced under warranty. Within 6 months the problem had returned but due to BMW not having a modified clutch I've coped with my juddering all over the place. My car is now obviously out of AUC warranty and covered by comprehensive BMW insured warranty.

Would or has anyone successfully had their clutch/flywheel replaced under BMWs insured warranty?

hi steve, quick phone call to another dealer [don't mention 1st refusal]- go with tech on test drive - i think it may be down to quotas -
bmw don't want a recall it would cost them many millions imho!

I have sympathy with all the above Beemer drivers, my 3 tourer e91 is beyond acceptable.ihave owned it for twelve months. & the clutch is as bad as ever .i had a 5 series auto before this & it was fantastic ,I just figured the 5 auto box had spoiled me , but that's not the case . The clutch is crap ,full stop. Lot's of dealers have advised me against manuals . It is obviously a design fault , & BMW should be big enough to admit it .& accept a recall is necessary.

Just thought id drop a line to see how is everyone elses clutch going so far.

My E92 has done approx 1,500 miles since the new clutch, so its reasonable to say it has bedded in and here is what I'm getting.

Slight vibration feel when pulling off (the gear stick can vibrate quite a bit at this point too). It's not a full blown judder but on some steep hills without enough gas it can feel like it.

Occasionally when in neutral sitting in traffic, the gear stick can start vibrating rather violently until you touch it, which make it vibrate less (how it should as normal)

2nd and 4th gears are often harder to engage than other gears.

I'm not sure if there is still something not right and whether this warrants another trip to the dealers. Anyone facing any of the above issues with their new clutch?

Still no issues with mine. Well nothing that takes any pleasure away from the car. The clutch can feel a little 'woolly' if I'm in crawling traffic and the temperature rises but it's not an issue for me.

I do get the loud vibration from the gear lever occasionally but I think I've always had that and I think I'm right in saying it's a E9x 'feature' to some degree or another. Touch the gaiter and it goes.

I've noticed a slight wobble when taking off on a steep hill, not a vibration as such just a hint of one.
The clutch seems woolly changing from 1 - 2 like a delay has been introduced and you really do need to keep you foot off it in low gears.
Quick starts from standstill are now straightforward and drama-less so overall it's made the car a pleasure to drive again.

Bought mine on AUC warranty 4 months ago. Soon realised something was wrong with the clutch when starting off on a hill. Got quite heavy vibration/judder etc. Always seemed worse in the cold. Took car in to BMW. They diagnosed the problem. First tried the software update, said 9/10 times it didn't work and finally agreed to replace the clutch and flywheel with the new modified one. Its so much better now its been done.

if your car is still under warranty keep on pushing your dealer!

I found something on BMW OEM web page for e90 320d 2008. Now, there are two flywheels with different part numbers! For one it says up to 09/2011 and "Observe PuMA measure 34152974". Can someone check what is this PuMA measure. It probably something about clutch judder! Does anyone know more about this?

Hi all

Just wanted to add I am having judder setting off in first gear. I've had a couple of vans this weekend and it's made me realise that my car has a problem as it's so much smoother setting off in these. I have a 2008 320d so is out of warranty and I'm just wondering if I was to take it to an independent BMW specialist could they fix it? I know taking it to a main dealer would be expensive. I'm in the Leeds area if anyone could give any recommendations to any garages in the area.

Cheers

Hi all, was wondering if I could have some advice about my E92 320d.

I've always had difficulty from 1st to 2nd gear, it is hard to get it to go smoothly without lurching. I've driven the newer F30 320d and it did not feel like this. Moreover, I've driven an E92 petrol 325i and this was so much smoother. Does it sound like the "judder" other people have experienced?

There is a certain driving style required to getting nice smooth changes, from stand still and brween first and second IMO. Certainly very different to anything petrol and pretty much everything else I've driven.

I think it's a combination of 'torquey' engine, sizeable clutch, clutch delay valve thingy and customary low ratio diesel first gear.

You'd definately know if you've got the judder though. Try reversing up an incline, that's when mine really showed up. Thought the car was going to vibrate apart.
