Abysmal trade in values.....

Shocking trade in values at BMW at the moment.

Just started having a think about what to get next and although I fully expected to be grabbing my ankles come trade in time I think £11500 for a 2 & 1/2 year old, very well spec'd immaculate 320d with 31000 on the clock is rather naughty if you ask me.

Now this is not strictly speaking a trade in against a normal retail purchase where the trade in can be artificially inflated, as I get rather a healthy percentage off of new BMW's through a work scheme, but still, £11500, come on.

As it's below the MGFV I'm trying to figure out if either they genuinely don't want it as there's no money in it, unlikely, or they're hoping I simply won't be bothered in trying to sell it privately and I'll just hand it back and start again.

Am I out of touch?

For a 2.5 year old car, that sounds awful.

The dealers seem to be offering peanuts whilst asking top rate for their cars.

I want to change, but no chance am I paying inflated prices.

It sounds a bit low but not by a great amount. AUC prices for one these is about 15k and BMW dealers look to make 3k on a vehicle. So they are probably 500-1000 short of a fair price. Obviously spec is important so it depends what you mean by "very well spec'd".

Well I ran a valuation powered by CAP which takes into account the options etc and it has given a trade in value of £14500-£15450, which is probably more in line with where I was thinking it would sit.

So far as AUC, when I had a search a couple of days ago there were none coming up with my spec. There weren't actually any E90's or F30's for that matter, coming up nationally with the professional media and visibility packs. Appreciate it doesn't add a great deal but it should tweak it up a little.

Interestingly though a 'Sport Plus' option has appeared on the BMW new build web page which adds some great options for £1900 more on the F30 and F31's. If you add the visibility pack as well it also drops down a bit as well as the Xenon's are in both options.

Will have to have a think, if I'm walking away at the end of the term I've got a few months to decide.

Anyway, the new Octavia vRS estate looks like it's going to be very nice....

I recently have a PX valuation on my car from a BMW dealership that was £2000 less than the figure from We Buy Any Car's website!

Mate, dealer trade in rates are shocking. Am trying to sell a car before I get my e92, and all the dealers are offering ridiculous low rates.

Issue is the private sale market is full of scammers and time wasters, so the dealers know that they can get a great deal off those who don't want the hassle. It's a tough ride, many times I've been tempted to chuck it in and just sell to the dealerships.....but that is why they can offer such low prices, as people WILL just give in and go for the no hassle option

+1

My occasional dips into the selling-privately scene have been such a donkey-ride to hell that I have happily let a dealer make a grand or two to avoid it.

From my experience, you have to shop around to get a decent PX price. I had my old 320d valued by three different dealers and one offered an acceptable price, dealer 2 offered £2k less and Dealer 3 £3.5k less. It was strange as the cars in dealer 2 and 3 were newer than dealer 1 and they had a bigger margin on them too. Once you have a PX price you can even sell the car to them without buying one from them. The dealer I dealt with was amazed at the condition my car was in and even said to me that what appeals to them is the fact that it can go straight onto the forecourt with very minimal work (hence the higher offer price).

If it helps drop me a PM if you want more details mate, as the dealer I dealt with is actually not a million miles away from Cambridgeshire

Appreciate that buddy, might take you up on those details when I get a bit nearer to deciding what I'll be doing. I'm moving house this week so I'm going to be pre-occupied on that for the next couple of months I'm sure.

I've actually been a little misleading with the price I was offered as that was for a trade in against a new vehicle with a delivery date in October, so that's an October value. Still ridiculously low though considering its MGFV (balloon) sits far in excess of this at the end of the term in January.

In essence, so far as BMW are concerned, if I want to trade in early against a new car I'm in fairly considerable negative equity now, let alone at he end of the term, so have to buy myself out of this first or wait until January and hand it back.

I'm quite happy that I'll be able to do better than the current offer either with BMW or elsewhere come decision time, if not I just hand the car back I suppose. I will take into account the fact I do get a healthy discount on new BMW's anyway, so as there's a lot of depreciation I've not really taken a hit on in the first place, they are still quite attractive.

Who knows, I might even keep this one for a bit longer as I'm still very happy with it and like yours, it is exceptionally well looked after!

I got £16132 (guaranteed sept valuation) for my 320d 18000miles similar spec to you (not quite as well specced as yours I think) alpine white 60plate in mint condition and 10% off a m135i.
Push harder ask lots of dealers, there are some desperate out there to sell cars.

Hi Lee, now that's quite interesting and not a bad trade in value / discount level at all. I think I'll be trying my two local dealerships once I get the house move out the way
