Get a Quaife, OSG, or Drexler.

Wavetracs have issues. Documented by myself and others. Buy one to save a few hundred bucks at your own peril.

Terrible customer service, noisy unit. If you have $2k and you want to have a car that is very noisy, go ahead and buy one. The unit also makes a thumping noise when you put the car in reverse or from 1st to second hear.

I spent $480 extra for uninstallation, $90 for shipping and sent the unit to Wavetrac for inspection. They had my unit for 8 days for inspection and didn't take care of the issue. They sent me the same unit, the excuse they had was that the head engineer was at the SEMA show, then went out of the country. Here is the video I made for them to describe the issue. So, you make your own decision. I deeply regret this purchase. I also have solid diff. Mounts which may or may not contribute to the noise.

Mine is flawless, not noisy at all and no clunking. I think it depends on how it is installed.

Hey Rob,

I would love you to chat with the shop that installed my diff. They only work on BMWs and very reputable in ATL area. They build Diffs for E46s, and E30 race cars. They also installed my turbos, clutch etc. for me. Anyway, I am very glad that your unit is functioning fine and you have no issues. I am just letting people know about my experience. I purchased the unit from Harold at HPA, he was very helpful and worked hard to try to resolve the issue but I just didn't have 3 weeks to wait for these guys to get back to me with an answer.

robc1976,
Some of it is install, but wavetrac I think has really terrible QA, you can luck out on a good unit or get one that's trash.

My current WT didn't make noise, but kept popping out half-shafts. Installed by VAC, fixed by Rick@DEFIV.

Popping' halfshafts I've seen exclusively on WT units. Noise + clunk usually WT units.

Fortunately for me, I had no choice but to purchase a Quaife at the time, because WT wasn't yet around, and Harold seemed to have the best prices. With that said, I have to concur with what others were saying about the noise and clunking sounds, and I attribute that to backlash issues.

When I first had my Quaife installed, there was a lot of noise and clunking, so I had them tweak the backlash and it turned out perfect.

My wife has a M-B E350 4Matic, which has its own unique noises that are considered normal, including the occasional "clunk" when the car switches gears at low speeds.

My Quaife reacts the same way, especially on cold starts, so no matter how much you try to eliminate the noise, the tranny will "clunk," but only on very rare occasions.

G/L with resolving your dilemma. Despite all of the drama, I still believe that the very first and best mod for our rides is to replace the open diff with a real, mechanical diff, whether clutch plate, gear, or hybrid. Then you can do this:

With solid diff mounts noise is standard. when i swapped my wavertrac unit from my car to a customers car the car had 0 noise from P- R and from R-D

but in my car because i had lockdown kit it clunked from when changing from R-D ect.

solid bushings transfer noise. and that is the nature of the beast.

anyways i can get the Wavetrac installed for $1800 parts&labor.. + shipping.
