hidXenonLights retrofit kit
Someone posted about this kit. I have installed this retrofit kit and ran a full functional test which revealed the following flaws: with engine running, front dome light on (which turn on all other interior cabin lighting) the front left/right map lights cuts out, they will re-sett if engine is shut off and restarted. Replaced the map lights with OEM incandescent bulbs and the OEM functionality was restored. Tech support stated to me that there some CAMBUS issue with the e93 series model, which is odd to me because in the front dome there are factory mounted two red LED's....So please watch out....

Great write up!
When doing this yourself, be warned that taking the front center dome is a PAIN! Also, if you plug in your LED lights in the front and rear dome and they don't work, keep playing with the pins until they light up. Thanks yamazaho and Mike. |

On e93 (production model of Sept 09) the canBus (controller area network bus) issue relates to the dome's center bulb & two map lights ONLY. All other interior lights are canBus error free: i.e. two front footwells (type 194), two door puddle (type 194), four vanity mirrors (two ea) (use only 1 Luxer sub mini panel, per visor otherwise you will blind your sweetheart/boyfriend), four at the rear center hump (again use only 1 Luxer sub mini panel otherwise your rear will be lit like Times Square), one festoon (32mm) in the glove, one 194 in trunk lid, and one festoon (36 mm) in the side trunk. I pried out the front dome assembly out by using my thumbs in the map light holes, watch out for two sockets at each end. The two built in red ambiance led's are impedance matched to the native canBus. I used three type 194 led's with built in chip set to mimic the incandescent bulb impedance; one for center and two for map lights I did not take the dome apart and glue in a 6 led sub panel which won't work for the e93 series. The luminance is more than adequate with one type 194 bulb at center dome with reflective mirror, I seldom use the map lights.

Front Dome
The original DIY pictures on how to remove the front dome is almost one of the hardest ways to do it, As mentioned before me.
removing the small screw inside the small tab on the sun visor hook makes it way easier for the headliner to drop down. just do it for both sides and should be done in no time.... If your center LED's are not turning on its because you need to keep turning the bulb until it lights up...if that doesnt work turn the bulb holder also and try different combinations until it turns on...just remember interior lighting also turns off after a period of time..so you might also just want to close and reopen the doors. I was on a role until i got to the front dome..took me an extra half our to figure how to get to the bulbs. I got my kit from e92-lighting.com i have some pieces left over that came inside with the LED's for the front and rear dome...dont know what they are for.. anyone know? |

Bought and installed my LEDs from JLEVISW for my 06' 330 and used most of the instructions that you guys provided. Some lessons learned was to remove the sun visor screws (2) that make it so much easier than trying to go thru the headliner and pulling down. As soon as I tried to even fit my hand in between the liner and roof, I heard the liner starting to make noises so immediately stopped and went the route thru the visor. You can easily reach the bulbs and change them out. The center dome was easy as you pull on the end where the lights are towards the window and it just pops out pretty easy. I didn't have to screw or mess with the bulbs in any way. My kit came with replaceable housing so much of it was disconnecting the old housing for the new one. I waited to replace the truck light last and I did wait until all of the lights turned off before starting the switch. I also opened all of the doors and glove compartment. I did replace everything at once and then started the car to see if everything was correct. I left everything dangling just in case. I didn't blow a fuse and I only had one sun visor light that I needed to change because of the polarity. Over all great write up from everyone and thanks for sharing!

but found that my setup looks different than the original post, and is like the one below: The bulb looks like it will not fit, did i get the wrong bulb? If so, which one is the correct one for the setup below? |

Does anyone have a pic of how the T10 bulbs in the F1 autohaus kit are supposed to look like?
I just did the install and it was SUPER easy, but my bulbs are different than the ones shown on the first page of this thread.

e93 convertible ...
this has been my experience on e93: the only bulb affected by canBuss errors are the central front map & cabin light unit (convertible got only one in the front), at other locations by virtue of wiring resistance the low current led will not trigger canBuss errors. I bought mine from http://www.carhidkits.com cauz they emit a true blue white hue, they are either type 194 wedge type, 32 mm festoon and 36 mm festoon. For the vanity & rear center console (T10), I yanked off the tiny pea bulbs (4 each) and just replaced with a sub miniature 6 LED by Luxor1. I bought three type 194 wedge type w/computer chips for the front center module. And that's all I did, no canBuss errors, no flickering and no shutdowns after engine start/stop's. Note: I replaced the door sill LED with red color, it is super cool at nite to flood the ground with an array of red light every time you open the door.

I had 0 experience in doing such installs, and it took me only 20 minutes tops to do the whole install.. its pretty straight forward.

Finished my install, only difficult one was the two small ones in the front cluster.
I could in no way get my hand in to popo the front clips near the windshield. In the end used a thin knife to go up in front of the lights vertically to pop the clips and pull down. |
