08 Glove Compartment Question

As many of you may know, the rechargeable flashlight no longer comes in the glove compartment. I see the adaptors to turn the place where the flashlight recharges into an additional power adapter. Do our glove compartments still have the port where the flashlight used to be and if so will it have the power necessary to use one of those adaptors?

Yeah, but it's a non-rechargeable LED flashlight, right?

Do a search; there's an earlier thread with a picture. I'm thinking the wiring is probably still there, behind a new cover, but who knows?

The earlier thread concluded that the wiring was not there, because he had bought the adapter but couldn't find a place to put it.

I don't understand why they would do away with a rechargeable one...It makes perfect sense...I wonder what idiot from BMW decided this was not a good option rather than a battery operated one...Like people really check batteries all the time...what an idiot!!! I have an 07 and i have it, but still can't understand why not keep it??? dumb

As far as power goes, it's really not that big a deal. The fuse box is right there anyway, so if you want an accessory outlet you can just hardwire a socket on a cord. The flashlight socket adapter really isn't all it's cracked up to be.

+1 The reclaimed space doesn't seem like a good enough reason to delete such a useful item - flashlight & power socket in the glove box.

Realistically how many BMW owners feel comfortable wiring a socket from their fuse box? I would never attempt that mod. I would buy a cheap BMW accessory and plug it into the glove box for the extra power source. Its a change most people wont miss but I don't understand why BMW chose to remove this item.

The new flashlight just slips into a recess and it has an LED bulb, so the battery will last a very long time. You don't have to worry about the orientation like the plug in version so it is handier to reinstall when your done using it. Not having a power outlet in the glove box is no big deal since all the aux/ipod connections are in the center console and there is an outlet there. I would have liked to have an outlet like in my 545 located on the left side of the passenger's seat at ankle level however.

Rechargeable flashlight a dealer-installed option?

I just had a chat with my dealer yesterday (he informed me I couldn't chose Space Grey with my M Sport so I had to pick Sparkling Graphite instead), and I asked him about the rechargeable flashlight in 2008 models. He said it was a dealer-installed option, and always had been. He claimed that they were still installing this just the same as ever, and that I would get mine too. I doublechecked with him that he was not talking about the battery powered LED flashlight but the one with the power outlet in the glove compartment.

Keep in mind this is in Finland (Europe), so you guys on the other side of the pond might have it differently. Still, if my dealer is right, this would mean there's a retro-fit kit somewhere to be had if you guys want it that bad.

On the other hand, my dealer didn't know that M Sport wasn't available as Space Grey when first we discussed, so I'm not 100% he's right about this one. I guess we'll just have to wait and see and in Jan/2008 I'll be able to tell you guys if he was right or not
