How to increase performance on car?
I have a 2008 BMW 328i Sedan, I really want to increase the power on it as much as I can for as cheaply as possible. If I could I would like to get the 0-60 from 6 seconds to 5 seconds.
It would be much appreciated if you could provide a link to the parts as well. Also please do not mention that I should sell my 328 and get a 335. This is my first car and it was a trade in to my dads dealership so I got it for a REALLY good price and its like new and I love it. Cheers!

Not cost effective, you'll end up spending more $ than its worth, resale will be questionable and it'll be hard on the car. Just appreciate the car for what it is and consider that 20 years ago, it'd have been faster than most cars on the road.

Just enjoy your car the way it is. Unless you want to spend several thousands of dollars on mods, it's not really worth it.

You are not getting it down to 5 seconds unless you invest a lot under the engine or you put a supercharger
5500 $ ( 4500$ parts , 1000 labour) - supercharger kit , will get you up there to stock 335 power (if you go stage 1 more) and probably 5 seconds . However reliability is unknown since it is a brand new kit but soon we will probably have more info on it since the kit has already been shipped out to some members. I would not recommend this route if you plan on selling the car soon or not keep it for a long time Other than that , AA headers + AA tune + 3 stage manifold would be a nice combo too , probably close to 215-220 at the wheels , maybe in the mid 5s on a good run but it would cost you around 3000$ ( tune 500$ , 3 stage 1500$ , headers 100o$) Cheapest way to make power AA tune + AA headers , they claim 207 at the wheels , which would be highs 5s , low 6s and its around 1500$s plus labour to install the headers I have also seen people getting 3 stage intake plus the AA tune and make decent power, however it would probably be more expensive than headers and tune Or you could just get the AA tune ( I dyno at 203 at the wheels) for 500$ |

Really, your best bang for your buck is the AA tune- hands-down. A performance intake and performance exhaust will just make the car sound great- which isn't such a bad thing considering the NA engine sounds beautiful when pushed up to it's higher revs. |

But my car was nearly $15k less than what a same year 335i is in same condition, so you are saying if I spend $5k I could get same power? But of course less reliability because of the kit.

I can not recommend another one for 500$ since it looks like they do not make much of a difference ...At least that it what more people who had them say Headers would be nice but there are over 1000 and the 3 stage intake is around that price too. You could probably get a magnaflow exhaust for under 1000k and it would give you some ponies , nothing big though , mostly sound |

Check out the dynos. Its not a huge increase but it is the best bang for your buck specially if your car is automatic I dyno at 203 in at AWD (never did the dyno before though) which is roughly 245- 250 at the crank . So around 15-20 hp increase at the crank ... I def felt the increase but it was not day and night type of increase.... A lot easier to do it with turbocharge car where you can expect 50 plus hp increase with a tune Last edited by rick100; 11-17-2014 at 06:28 PM.. |

supercharger. 4500$ plus installation Not sure about 5 seconds but you ll probably be close. I dont know if it is reliable as it is not officially in the market . Company that sells the kit has a reputable name as far as I know. If you were looking for go 0-60 in 5 then you got the wrong car .... 328s are nice for what they are and they are quick for most people ... I would not even recommend a 335 for you as I dont believe you could keep up with maintenance at your age .... good luck... |

If your 08 328 has 80,000 miles it's probably worth about $14k. A 2008 335 with 80k is not worth $29k, it's worth about $16k. My advice since you're 16 is sell the 328 and buy a civic with a manual. You don't need a fast car when you're 16. When you're out of college buy a 335. It's gonna more reliable than a supercharged 328i just because of the fact the engine was made for forced induction. And if you really want to supercharge your 328i for some insane reason, you're probably gonna need bigger injectors, aftermarket ecu, higher capacity fuel pump, and depending on how much boost you wanna run, forged rods, pistons, etc. Like I said, buy a car you can beat on like a civic si with a manual and then buy a nicer car when you're older. You'll appreciate it more and odds are you're gonna get into an accident and smash your first car up anyways.

I started a thread on how to achieve the most gains for our 328's without spending thousands of dollars and received some very helpful tips, check out the link below.

You asked about turbo. You can't get a turbo for your car.
Supercharger is your only option, but not worth it. AA = Active Autowerke. These are the things they make specific for 328. http://store.activeautowerke.com/collections/e9x-328 But honestly, you should focus on cosmetics. Keep it clean and tasteful. Your 16 year old self doesn't need to be going any faster than you can with this thing stock. If I could tell my 16 year old self that 17 years ago, I would. Time and time again. He would thank me now. Congrats on your car and good luck with whatever you decide.

When I was looking at cars last year a 2011 328 with less than 20 000 miles was selling for roughly 28 k to 31 k with premium package at the dealer A 335 Same year with similar mileage and similar package was selling between 34 k and 39 k .... In ontario there is a 13 % charge on tax. So the difference between both was around 6 K and it was a used one... I was only considering the N55 engine though I was not able to find a 335 for under 31k , while I was able to find 328s for 26 k ... At the end of the day I just went for the 328 as the deal was too good and I was able to pay it all cash ( private sale , I saved a lot in taxes) while buying a 335 would ve been 6 k more plus interest on a small loan ( probably another 2 k ) It may be different for the 07 , 08 , 335 models as they are famous for having high maintenance ( Im sure there are reliable ones out there) and many people do not want to buy them but still the 328 is still cheaper by a lot .... |
