N55 reliability and maitenance
So the e90 is new to me, a 06/11 build 335i. Warranty is coming to an end in little over a month, but I'm only at 21k miles.
Higher mileage N55s. What's your experience? What's your ownership costs as the miles add on. Thx! |

I have a 2011 e90 335i with extended maintenance and warranty.
Ownership cost, aside from some insurance work, = $50 for one round of extended warranty work on a leaking oil gasket. You can add $1200 for the extended maintenance and $2250 for the Gold Extended Warranty. Issues/maintenance dealership dealt with, aside from insurance & recall work: Carwash x8 Oil Change x5 Wipers x3 Wiper fluid Refill x4 Radiator flush x1 Brake line flush x1 Brakes x4 Spark plugs x1 Engine Air Filter x2 Cabin Air Filter x1 Broken charge pipe x2 Headlights set to proper height and fix auto-level x3 Split radiator reservoir seam x2 Screeching speakers that wouldn't stop unless car was turned off x1 Left muffler replaced due to faulty flap x 1 Rear window gasket replaced x3 Rear right tail light assembly stopped working and replaced x1 Entire e-diff/DSC/DTC system stopped working, needed software update(I think?) x1 Car's electronics all went crazy for 30 minutes, car refused to release key, battery died, battery needed to be replaced x1 Rotors caused extensive shaking during braking and replaced x3 Oil gasket replaced due to leak x1 Cup holder stopped working, needed to be replaced x1 Broken Brake Sensor Wire fixed x1 Oil Sensor Wire fixed x1

My car has had the M Performance Suspension and the Stage 2 PPK installed since around 10,000 miles, which might be in part why it's had some of the listed issues. More power with a firmer suspension can probably cause some failures of peripheral engine parts here and there.
Also, I don't believe my issues are necessarily commonplace. This is what has happened to me during my time of ownership. I like to take my car out for sporty drives every other weekend or so, and I happen to also drive in a lot of heavy stop and go traffic, often for hours on end. I am sure that has an impact as well.

"Only" 68000 miles?
That's over 20,000 miles a year for just over 3 years, and for probably 6-8 months of my ownership, the car has been in the shop for insurance work, maintenance, or modifications. That's a goodly number of miles to put on a car in the amount of time I've owned it.

Wow makes me feel better about my car. I have an 7/10 build E90 with 62k miles in which I have replaced the oil filter housing gasket, oil cooler gasket and just this weekend the valvetronic servomotor. However, I am not sure if the servo motor went bad due to a poor reinstall of my VANOS units from the recall. I am expecting the water pump to go at 80K miles and will be changing the auto trans fluid and filter at 75k miles.

My 2007 E92 335 has 37K and I've had to do nothing.
Just regular maintenance like fluids, brakes, belt, plugs, tires. And the mod bug of course.

I guess I've been pretty lucky so far then. Besides regular scheduled maintenance I've had to take my car in for the dreaded vibration issue which turned out to be warped rotors, but I also believe I need new control arms bushings. Also, the tail light module went out so I got that replaced. Otherwise it's been pretty good to me. I'm approaching 45k miles with no mods except a few cosmetic things. I've also been on the PPK from the factory since I had a late 2011 build.

There are so many threads on this already but why not...
2011 e92 M-Sport with 35k miles -Broken Charge Pipe -Heater Core Replacement -Cup Holders -Vanos Recall Not really that bad but I wouldn't own the car without an extended warranty, I have a 3rd party warranty that covers electronics as well so I feel pretty confident for the next 6 years 50k miles. (about $2500 for warranty)

2011 E92 335xi with currently 43k miles
oil change every 6k miles front rotors and brakes all around 35k miles lower control arms, 35k miles water pump, failed right after the HPFP roughly 32k miles HPFP (yes apparently this is an issue on the N55 too.. supposedly the new on is from a re-design), failed at about 30k miles got some water in my front passenger seat (my fault) and it caused the X-drive control computer located underneath it to fail over time, so had that replaced 39k miles front differential had a leak, BMW replaced the whole unit 39k miles Vanos bolt broke off but that was replaced under recall; this also got me a new valve cover gasket and bolts plus a free oil change 37k miles OFHG has a minor leak, replacing it at the end of the month; 43k miles My 328 was a tank; the 335 is being a prissy little bitch. But all in all all work was warrantied so I'm not going to cry about it. Last edited by Delta0311; 02-12-2015 at 11:33 AM.. |

Ok i can see its not too bad but wow today my car gave me an alert that i was overheating then my car had no power on the highway. I stoppd and kept going after 10 mins. Luckily i was on my way for an oil change and the water pump broke so it cost me 820 cdn for the water pump including labor, do you think its fair price btw i do it at an indy shop. Also would have the dealer repleace it under extended warranty cause i refused it 2 weeks ago and jm feeling bad hehe. Also whats the hpfp and will it come soon for me since im at 50k miles thx for your time buds !

the n55 is more reliable tho at least theoretically, because there are less moving parts. but at the same time more complicated. less potential if you are into modding. at least for now |

OP, I'm at over 109,000 miles on my 2011 335xi. Only major issue was the water pump at 89k (see link in my signature). The factory chargepipe connection flange cracked at 106k... probably due to my Vishnu tune and too much boost
For preventative maint, I change the oil at about every 8k miles, using a good Euro Mobil. I DIY most everything I can, avoid dealerships at all costs. Dozhdbog has a long list, but most are regular maintenance things that you would have to do to just about any hi-mileage car. The walnut blast at 101k miles showed very little build-up compared to an N54 engine. I had it done anyway, even though it probably really didn't need it. Your best sites for maintenance and parts are realoem.com, bavauto.com and ecstuning.com - there are many others, but these are my favorites... also if you are looking at a particular car to buy, the VIN decoder at www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html Check out this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=755057
