Got me thinking what happened there but as long as you car runs fine I don't think that's an issue....My OCD would file that down then Jb weld it just to make it look better....still really confused on how that happened:

Just curious, what made you want to take the engine cover off?

It looks like someone shot a bullet through the side of that coil pack. Very odd, but I wouldn't be too concerned.
Curious, is there a hole in the other side of the casting for that coil as well? Perhaps someone tried drilling it to either remove the coil pack or to zip tie the coil pack down (and in their infinite wisdom, concluded that this was the best option??). Regardless, I would remove the coilpack, stuff something into where the coilpack was so nothing falls down there, then sand and fill that hole (jb weld). It might be overkill but the last thing you want is for water to enter into that area and get down into the spark plug and mess up the connection between the coil and plug. You see something new everyday on this cars! G/L! |

Could be causing a vacuum leak. Google 335 cracked valve cover. Usually happens at the edges, I dunno what happened here.

Looks to me like someone pulled the top off of one of the coils and then tried to pound a screw driver through it to try and make themselves a handle to pull out the rest of it with. May have pounded that screwdriver a not too deep? That is my guess...

How about this wild explanation.
The casting flaw allowed moisture to get in there in there when cool, then once warm, sealed up the small leak. The moisture boiled off and generated enough pressure to blow open the flaw. It also damaged the outside of the coil when the steam rushed out. |

Hard to tell from the photo but it sort of looks like the coil was arcing. Is there a tiny pinhole in the jacket? Slicing that sucker open should give some indication. If that's the case the spot likely became overheated, weakening the metal.
