ZF Automatic transmission leak fix?

I changed the filter pan and ZF transmission fluid and still have a leak. It seems to be leaking from the electrical harness plug connector sealing sleeve at the rear of the transmission above the fluid pan. Is there a way to change that sealing sleeve without changing the fluid seeing as I just changed the filter pan and fluid? Thanks

Yeah.

Go back about ~8 years and you'll find a good DIY thread.

well you have to drain in a clean container and fill back - you also have to remove the filter, because there's a white locking bracket to pull down to release the mechatronic sleeve and then insert the new one in and push the bracket up again to lock it in ... I pushed it in leveraging off a ratchet... goodluck

Drain into a clean container and reuse it. This is an extremely common leak.

It gets annoying answering questions that a simple search would have answered. Save the hand holding for your woman.

Do you honestly think I did not research into this if I changed the filter pan and atf fluid myself? I researched many DIY's on how to do the automatic transmission service and that the way to get to the mechatronic sealing sleeve is through dropping the filter pan. So the whole point of my thread was to ask if there may be another way to get to mechatronic sealing sleeve through not dropping the pan that I may have missed when researching. Is that so hard to answer? A simple NO would have even sufficed

Actually I'll drop my 'opinion' in this one. Yournamehere - you who couldn't even get an original name but has to copy the jackass's steve-o's butt tattoo, if you hate stupid questions, then maybe you should just skip the stupid comments and stop responding? Every time you responded you put this thread back to the top?

Seriously though, what is the purpose of these forums if not to ask questions? MANY times, people search, hell they KNOW better than to ask a question because quite frankly some a-hole like you will chime up and say sh!t. I've been on the net - CAR forums since 96 when I got a then brand new piece of crap mustang GT (crap because it had an anemic 4.6 that was asthmatic - look that one up and understand the comment if you care). The reason I bring that up. The thing that makes a board special - is the groups willingness to help out a brother. YOU - yournamehere are just a jerk that feels a need to try and be superior by putting down someone for asking a question that probably has been asked many times. HOWEVER unless we or anyeone else that uses these boards are willing to go through pages and pages of crap (which IS what I do - note my LOW posting count), well a question will be asked again. AND besides MAYBE since the last time it was asked, someone came up with something new in how to fix it?

I have no problem with questions and for that matter giving answers when I can. I'm a LONG time gearhead - NOT BMW enthusiast, I go to cars based on creating sleepers - this car - ULTIMATE sleeper. I've been on MANY different boards - some cool and some extremely shitty (try mazdaspeed.crap to understand how terrible a board can be). Most though are good, friendly and helpful. I like to think, that most people don't mind this type of question, but every once in a while, someone feels a need to be jerky.

SE7EN335 - I hope you got your answer. Far as I know, you should have changed that mechatronic unit out when you did the trans fluid. BUT that is crying over spilled milk at this point. I guess now you just have to re-use the fluid. From what I understand, that is what the dealer would do too.

Thanks mate. Definitely got my answer in that I would need to reuse my old fluid which is only a week old. No biggie. Glad that you can empathize with my point of view

I truly pity the few egotistic self centered people on this forum such as Yournamehere90. It shows what kind of personality they have and how disliked they are, both on this forum and in the real world.

Search Mechatronics Sleeve replacement - it is pretty easy, did it in a few hours on my back under the car. Unfortunately you just did 75% of the work as you need to pull the pan again, unplug the mechatronics plug and then from the inside with the pan removed, you can release the mechatronics sleeve lock and pop it out, replace, plug it back in, put the pan back on and refill. Part is like 18 bucks.

Getting my tranny fluid and pan/filter changed next Saturday. Will also do the mechatronics sleeve as a preventative.

It was an issue in the early cars, by 2011 it may not be prone to leaking, but if you have the pan off, it is very little work an short money just in case, I would do it also!

From my research, anytime you drain the fluid and drop the trans pan, it is probably a good idea to replace all of these inexpensive and easy to replace parts(these are for 6HP21):

BMW Mechatronic Adapter (128i 328i 335i Z4) - Genuine BMW 24347588724 1 $18.99

BMW AT Transmission Sealing Sleeve - Genuine BMW 24347588725 1 $18.18

BMW Auto Trans Valve Body Sealing Sleeve - ZF 24107536339 2 $17.98

BMW Auto Trans Valve Body Sealing Sleeve - ZF 24107536340 1 $10.99

BMW Auto Trans Valve Body Sealing Sleeve - ZF 24107536341 1 $11.99

Total is ~$80. *Prices from FCP Euro for reference.

YMMV.

AH YES! I heard about how the mechatronic adaptor usually fails around 60-70k miles. And since my car is at 85k kms, would definitely need that mechatronic adaptor. However, I heard the other parts such as the valve body sealing sleeves needs to be changed every 100k miles or so. And the solenoids inside the transmission needs to be changed every 120k miles. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks, but ill definitely order the sealing sleeve and the adaptor and maybe do the valve body sealing sleeve at my next gearbox service in about 25k kms or so?

Up to you. I think working on this trans is a PITA because of the fill and level check procedure, so I plan on replacing them all anytime I drop the pan. FWIW, I am at 120k and solenoids are still working fine.

120K miles and your solenoids are still running strong?! That is incredible. Saves paying a grand on the solenoids

Have heard a few horrible stories of them failing at about 100k miles
