Super sad day for my wife, She had to take her rescue to the vet and put her down after having her for 18 years. She held her one last time for a time and then they while she was holding her, they put her to sleep.
Tough day, last month her sister passed from cancer on Chrismas day and now her beloved cat Pea. Tough one. |

The day is coming for Max and I literally DREAD it. When I was a young child, I remember asking my mother why my kitty had to die so soon. Her response? "Their little hearts just beat too fast with love for us for them to stay with us forever." I still remember that to this day. R.

Not a cat hater at all, but I do my best to be a cat killer.
See I built a large pond to enjoy nature in my front yard. Sometimes I can't hear the TV from the orgy going on outside. 4 types of native frogs, 3 types of lizards, 3 types of bird, 2 types of marsupials all breed there amongst various dragon flies, butter flies, bees, and various local shrimp and small fish I have added. Suppose the odd snake or two in there also. Its fenced high enough to stop cane toads but lets nature pass. Planted heavily with native plants around rock clusters for shelter and provide appropriate breeding spots. Got a couple breading boxes for marsupials and birds also. I have bower birds so they breed on the ground, plus a qual or two. But what stops the whole process is domestic and feral cats that come calling for their regular killing fun. I can tell as I find a half mauled lizard or bird, or they just disappear. I know they are domestic because I can see them. The feral cats are extremely aware of humans and put a new meaning to stealth. But sometime those much loved/lost posters on power poles are not just for runaways. So all I ask is keep your much loved cat inside or an enclosure please. Just so you know, I'd have a cat as they are as funny as, just the wife is allergic to them. |

I agree. Cats that roam free, whether wild or domestic, can be pests and decimate populations of birds and other small animals. My cat(s) are 100% inside cats. It's mostly for their own safety, though, as I have lost cats in the past to disease, fighting with other cats/animals, cars, etc. Last edited by Esteban; 02-08-2026 at 03:25 PM.. |

Down under we have rules for dogs including fences, registration, walking on leads etc, because I presume it doesn't go well when a human is set upon by a dog. Cats however don't have the reputation for tearing a human apart, just the poor old wildlife. Still I had a mate put his arm down a log to retrieve a feral cat, that was one silly and bloody mistake. |

I have read that the domestic cat (whether feral or not), is responsible for the extinction of more species than any other mammal. We have 3 cats, all indoors.

I've been in the desert in the middle of now where and seen a cat the size of a small german shepard, no I would not believe it either if I had not seen it. Also watched feral cat sit under a remote water trough. These little native birds would fly down for a drink, then quick as flash the cat would pounce and no more bird. Amazing on one hand but disastrous on the other. They have no enemies hear besides a human, and 9.75/10 to quick and cunning to easily out smart them too. Genetic modification to breed a single sex is about the only course of control, but that doesn't fly well. Keeping them inside makes for a better cat anyway I feel, but the ones who do are in the minority I think. |

A lot of the concern over cats taking out local animals traces back to some very flawed research on a small number of active hunters. They basically extrapolated from a few known hunters, in what calculates out to unrealistic numbers - more 'kills' than the estimated bird population of England IIRC. Many cats have no interest in hunting, and feral colonies exist as part of an ecosystem unless you get into wierd issues like Australia's isolated situation.

So. I came home from flying for the past couple of days and the Minister had left me a serving of her homemade chili that she'd made for a Super Bowl party yesterday.
I sat down to enjoy it (it was *outstandingly* good), when Bailey decided to jump up on the table to see what was the what. He *knows* better. He LITERALLY snorted at me when I told him to get down from the table. SNORTED. WTF??? Who taught him THAT particular response? I had my suspicions, but the Minister just laughed when I got all outraged and told her. Great. The Terrorists (yeah, I'm looking at you, Piper and Bailey) have *officially* reached their feline teenager years. R.

Time to get this thread back to page 1.
Our new sisters have apparently not heard that bit about the belly being a no-go zone. They not only permit belly-pets, they actively solicit them. |
