335's and Z4's are keeping the N54.

Yes, but what about the 1 series? My 2010 135i goes into production in 2 weeks. First week of Feb. to be exact. The N54 was what sold me on the car. What's worse is I'm in Iraq and bought the car offline so I can't see it at all until mid-April, but I'm paying at time of production. My military salesman told me it was the twin-turbo I was buying, but I've never even met the guy. He could be just telling me that for all I know. Online automobile sales are such a headache!

Sure, and so is every other BMW moniker for marketing purposes (by defintion). The reality is that the car was going to cost more regardless of what they call it though. If the x40 automatically meant more money, then all the x35 cars would be called x40 now. They aren't. Only the 740i and 740iL, and the 340i which is only in Australia (for now, and is called the 335is here in the US).

they will be continuing to use the N52 NA engine in North America.
Europe will be using the inline6 N53 NA engine.
The N52 will die after the models it is currently offered in are replaced, and no new N/A engines will follow any time soon in the US. Even if the X1 or other near term upcoming vehicle is launched with an N52 in the US (which I personally think is only an outside shot) then they will only have it until the turbo four is ready.

not entirely true- on the "is" versions will have the N54 for 2011.

I have written this a thousand times already.

There will be a 528 in the F10.... but that will have its own launch date and intro as it is a US only vehicle I will discuss this more as it approaches.

So you are saying that the memo quoted in the OP's post specifiying that the Z4 35i retains the N54 along with the Z4 35is is incorrect, right?

So to be clear, only the Z4 35is, 335is, and 740i/L will keep the N54?

(Just trying to get the facts - or at least prevailing beliefs, if you will - straight).

According to motorauthority.com: http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1...clutch-gearbox

This isn't news, strictly speaking, as BMW developed the engine for just such an application. Why, you ask? Because they've managed to get the output of the single twin-scroll turbo to match the twin-turbo's at 300 horsepower, and just as much torque at 300 pound-feet, but it does it 100 rpm earlier. That means less turbo lag, more boost across a wider rev range and therefore, better performance.

Cool, and fair enough, but that's only because the I4 is not ready yet. Agree? Come F1x LCI time, the N52 will be replaced by the turbo 4 (and probably called 530i, like I said earlier ).

I'm most curious about what the 335is is going to look like. This car with it's DCT may just keep me in the BMW family.

Ok this may be blatantly obvious but no ones said it yet. So what I want to know is where are the other 31 pages from the sales update? WTF!! The other pages are where all the real juicy info is.

What I can infer from this is that the Z4 will eventually get the N55 engine in 2012 models...

And the IS versions will keep the N54.

The 3 series will also receive this same engine switch with an 8 speed transmission later this spring. The recently revealed high performance “iS” version of the 3er will feature a tuned version of the current twin turbo motor (N54) and a 7 speed DCT.

If you look at the new Z4is pricing, I would imagine the 335is w/DCT will be about $5K more than that standard 335 w/8-speed, but we'll see.
