DME failed - 4k to Fix

So I am having a good week so far.

My DME failed a couple weeks back and I took the car back to my shop to get the problem solved. I thought it was my injectors and HPFP but they were changed and the problem persisted - cost 1200.

Then I had no choice but to send the car back to BMW to get the DME swapped out. They want to charge me around 3k.

I am pulling a 30A code if I remember correctly which states a diode has failed in the DME and misfires on multiple cylinders.

I am alittle worried that if I replace my DME that it might fail again. Some of the mods on my car that are worrying me are:

O2 sensor resister from Burger - electrical?
GIAC stage 2 software - could the upgrade in anyway have caused the failure?
Carbon Fiber engine cover - Could the cover have pinched some of the injector wires and caused the failure?

Any help would be great since my bills are racking up.

Also the dealer wants to change out the coilpacks too however I swapped in new ones at the shop and no change. So I dont think they have failed. Just the DME.

Anyone ever have problems with DME failure?

Thanks

Did you send your ECU to GIAC or was it flashed while on the car by one of the GIAC dealers ? Before changing the DME I would have sent it to GIAC for a reflash, maybe that error code was caused by a software bug or something.

exactly what i was thinking when i saw u had giac software. You should definitely get in touch with them and see if it can fixed by them before you spend that kind of money to get a whole new dme.

I also have both of these and the car runs fine, no problems at all.

I'd also try to send it to GIAC, maybe they can assist you with solving the problem.

The shop got in contact with GIAC direct however I will email them again to double check.

I researched the code a bit and it seems the 2007 335's have issues with their DME failing. Just my luck.

I am going to detune the car and see what happens.

Also the dealer wants to replace all the coil packs ... I told them not to until the DME is replaced and tested. We tested the coil packs in the other shop and they were supposed to be fine. By testing I mean swapped them out with another car.

Can GIAC on the forum give me any input on the issue? Since I don't want to install the GIAC software again and have the same problem.

so are you telling that after you removed GIAC software the problem went away and your car worked properly?

Can you please tell the production date of your car too?

thanks

My production date is late 2007. I think just the 2007 manu models are prone. Its just something you dont want to fail on your car since BMW charge you a fortune and only they can really do the work in Hong Kong. I guess I am just a little unlucky however it seems some other people are having the same problem.

The DME had the stage 2 GIAC software on it and was running great up until it just died. I dont mind paying the cost to fix it since I have no choice however I just dont want the problem to happen again.

Anyone have anymore info? The car only has 24k on the motor.

Just my luck huh ... anyway I am crossing my fingers that it is only the DME and not the coilpacks too.

I will contact GIAC tomorrow to talk to them - to see what their thoughts on the matter are?

That is just horrible, OP.

It sounds like the dealer isn't missing a chance to beat more cash out of you, either.

For once I am thankful I have a 2006 build 335i !

I hope you get this sorted out less painfully.

The DME is only $1200. Not free, but much less than $3k. Buy it yourself and plug it in. Takes 30 minutes tops.

Doesn't the new DME need to be coded? It would be nice if it was as simple as just plugging it in...

Yea I'm pretty sure it needs to be paired to the immobilizer.

Has to be coded by dealership etc. And AFAIK you can't recode used ones.

Yeah the dealer has to code it ...

Anyway I am picking the car up today and they said she is running fine now. Parts replaced:

DME
All 6 coilpacks
3 Injectors
HPFP ...

Cost 34,500 Hong Kong Dollars = abt 4300 USD.

I am not sure why the coils had to be replaced but it was only an extra 700USD so I did it anyway.

Funny thing is the car only has like 25,000 miles on the motor ... and its a 2007. People dont drive much in Hong Kong and I only drive on weekends. Plus the car has been the shop for a while - haha.
