Since I have been looking for a seat also.. And I am not a type of person that will order most expensive brand just because everyone thinks it has to be the best due to the name, I have been researching brands that are cheaper but still very sexy and I found quite a few.
I don't think you need to spend $1500 plus on a seat to get quality, There are hundres of seats in the $400-$800 range with the same quality and some are even better looking then some of the overpriced brands. Keep in mind these are not replicas/fake stuff these brands have been around forever and have long racing history. I prefer reclinable but there are always buckets for a bit cheaper. I try to remember that there are hundreds of JDM and other old school racing brands that are top notch but the name isn't popular when you think of racing seats like Racaro/Bride/ Veilside:$600ish( The quality and the back support on this one looks amazing) Sparco:nothing new, they have some of the best seats in the world, not sure why more bmw guys aren't into them) This is a very sexy bucket seat, for $700ish. Buddyclub:$400ish (from the UK been around for a long time with the jdm and honda cars) JIC Magic: bucket seat:$650ish (Very old school Japanese drift/race company, theis products are top notch) Momo: Old school racing seat company, they have some of the prettiest seats on the market) Street racer seat, $350ish Atlantis: $300ish: Super cup:$650ish

Guess it comes down to the purpose of the seat(s). For street use, those you listed above at a good price would work. However, if you track, some organizations requires FIA Compliance seats. Other aspects to think about are weight, support, safety, needed hardware, and comfort options.

Agreed. I always sat in different seats at car shows and track events to see what seat is for me. Those that have local dealers are in the best position as they could try a larger variety.

This is dead on. Not only do you want to sit in them, you want to sit for more than 30 seconds because a seat that feels alright can quickly feel terrible in a few minutes. I can state without reservation the Recaro Profi SPG XL which I had in my Z (is current for sale -- shameless plug) was extremely comfortable for even 5 hour trips to Ohio.

Just throwing it out there, this thread isn't a "should I buy this seat" or "what seat should I buy" thread. It was created so people could see different options and users feedback. I used a combination of users feedback here, rode along in a few different seats, and drove in the seat of a few different cars with different setups on both the streets and tracks. With that been said, I've been more than satisfied with my purchase and was hoping that that the data presented could possibly help other members in the same way it did for me.

It'll be best to find someone local (should be easy in Cali) that would let you do a few ride alongs and/or drive. Different people have different tolerance and definition of 'comfortable.'

Most events that require FIA rated seats are pretty hardcore like competitions and such, usually simple track days or drag/drift events dont require that. buddy club and veilside dont have that long of a racing seat brand history but Sparco and Momo I would rate at same level as Recaro. Sparco also has a ton of accessories for their seats like different shaped pads you can purchase to adjust your lumbar support and make it more comfortable.. for example I like having extra cushion under the front of my legs near the front edge of the seat, because it relaxes my lower back muscles.. so they have add on pads and they make the seats look cooler too. Also some of these smaller brand seats actually are made by Bride/Recaro too. I totally agree on sitting in some of these seats a staying there for like 5 minutes.. it really takles a few minutes before your back starts feeling the pressure points caused by improper support.

The shoulders (for me) on the PPs made me felt pinched in, the NORMAL SPGs are more open. I could have been fine with the PPs but the SPGs were better for me |

Oh, I forgot to mention this.
If you measure the height of his back when sitting. Best way to line up the harness holes. Recommendation made by a local shop, Track First....that's where I sat in seats to find what I wanted. |

OMP has an option to add an adjustable shoulder belt height part - HC/893 - to some of their seats. Not exactly cheap but thought I'd mention it as an option.
