Wow. Quite the extensive build! And you're working with great guys at Classic. Chase Borden is a good dude.

This car is headed down a similar path to an E90 328i that I've had some experience racing. The car I was racing was originally built by Turner to head into IMSA ST competition, but was turned into a Club Racing car with minor aero (wing/splitter). We had a lot of headaches along the way, mainly because it was not being continuously supported by one shop, but it was a pretty fun car to drive.

What are your ambitions with this car? Eventual wheel-to-wheel racing?

Very cool! Want to give us some insight on what worked, what didn't work and how it drove?

I didn't build the car, so I don't have full history... But there was definitely issues when we replaced the fan to utilize a larger oil cooler and fan setup (you'll see in the NJMP video, if you watch it, that I was getting over-temp and had to use a higher gear in 2 key places to manage temp). It created all sorts of power and throttle issues that plagued us. They should have gone with stand-alone MoTeC right from the beginning, but spent $10k chasing issues before finally spending the $10k to go with full MoTeC.

So, I would advise leaving the powertrain as stock as possible (utilize known streetable mods) for as long as possible. If you're going to go highly-custom, plan it out from the beginning and you'll save in the long-run.

Oh, and you need to get rid of the EBFD (electronic brake-force distribution) and run a Motorsport ABS (or Bosch, etc). It sucks. It'll be pulling random brakes, trying to help the car turn, but really doing a bad job of it if you're properly managing your weight transfer and brake release into the turn.

The CAE shifter was sweet. The car was really easy to drive, overall. Great for enduros.

This seems...extreme. I know that 335I guys can get away with a oil cooler upgrade without the need to go this far....
One issue you may have been running into was the factory coding for Brake overheat protection which cuts power because of the brakes, not the oil/coolant temps.

The EBFD and the like can be coded out, no need for the full Bosch system!
You were the guine pig, we can learn from you!!

How did it drive, how successful was your campaign? (I plan on watching a few of those videos today! )

To be clear, it seemed that the issues were with the removal of the stock fan. Not anything to do with the oil cooler, itself. It ran fine on the dyno, but then had all sort of problems at the track.

Cool that the EBFD can be coded out. That will help. The stock ABS will eventually leave something to be desired, but you'll be fine if you're not sprint racing.

When it was working, the car drove well. It was very stable, with the longer wheelbase than some other cars. It probably could have used more front aero, but it was fine for what we were doing. Once we got the suspension tuning close, the car was generally easy to drive, with very progressive motions. Not quick/darty/snappy. The steering was light, but communicated more than the M235iR does, for instance. Hydraulic vs EPS, I suppose.

We won the BMWCCA Endurance Racing E1 championship, but to be honest, it wasn't hard-fought in that series at that time. The car has been doing some AER racing since then, but I haven't been in it in a while.

Yep, Chase has been hugely helpful, shame he hasn't much time to work on it for the last year, maybe done by summer, who knows...

What engine did you have in the e90 car?

Never was a plan, just screwing around. Maybe NASA GTS2, about the only class it can go into, I think. No time soon though.

The car was a 328i, so N52. I believe it had the 3SI in it, but I'm not sure.

I should see Chase next weekend at COTA. I'll tell him we conversed here.

Should be out again by then, going in next off-season to extend the cage to eight points and whatever engine work we come up with.

Bike is a copy of this one, mostly. Engine is an 88cu-in stroker at ~90bhp (engine dyno) and weighs 150lbs, seriously.

Can you do me a solid?
Can you post a pic of your sunroof delete?
Is the roof exposed inside the cabin?
I am still wanting to do a delete... Just want to see an actual, known good result & to have a solid reference point.

Whenever you find the time, of course!

Thanks!
