I'm able to pair my phone, make and receive calls, and sync contacts. I can only receive voice at this time since I haven't hooked up the MIC yet but I don't suspect that will be an issue. Once complete, I will post a full howto since all the information is scattered.

So the good news is, this retrofit can be done for $50-60 if you have an eBay cable (or know someone who does) and you're willing to run a few cables!!! There is no need to buy a new MULF2-Hi, Combox, or pay for "advanced" programming.
Microphone is in and works like a charm. I was able to route the cable up the passenger side without pulling any panels so that was a plus. So again, looks like this retrofit can be done without coding the HU or MULF directly and the ECU will do the rest.

Just to clarify -changing the VO does not require any OPS head or any custom OBD cable. Coding the OEM HU and certain modules does it.

Correct, but my point here is that for this retrofit that's all you need to do. You mentioned the need for CCC/CIC or and Ops head in order to get this done. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Were you ever able to put together the "how to" on this? Still thinking of doing it, have just had to put it off for a couple months.

I figured I should stop being a leech and give back to the community. I started the skeleton doc and was going to fill in all the pictures and web links this weekend until I saw this DIY. Well written and informative, mad props to lazd. I think he covered all the bases

I am just about to do this install and unsure where the wire at pin 21 connects to...or does it just hang loose?

In my experience pin 21 is not necessary. Just 19 and 1 (positive and negative) for the MIC.

2011 128i Question

I've been following this thread and decided to take a shot at the retrofit for my 2011 128. The MULF box has the bluetooth logo on it but it contains a white connector with 26 slots, not 38, and has a brown and brown/red wire coming out of slots 1 and 13. Can anyone tell me that proper wiring?

Hello !

Thank you for your nice Howto !

I have only one question, what can I do with the wire from pin 21 on the mulf ??
Where have I to plug it ?
Is it a simple wire like on pins 19 and 1 ?

Thanks !

you can leave it unconnected. but if your mic wiring has 2 wires and shielding, solder the shielding to a wire and connect to pin 21

Ok thank you snoozee !
So, I will use 2 simple wires for the mic and let the pin 21 free.

I have already coded $644 and activate BT on the 2RAD, I'm waiting for a SMB wire to try to connect my phone to test it !

Hi all,

I got my parts in the mail today, so I'm going to try this retrofit in my '09 128i this weekend.

Here's my question though: the microphone does not come with the wiring harness/plug that's designed to go with it. So when these instructions (attached photo 1) say "slot 1 goes to connector 1 on mic" and slot 19 goes to connector 2 on mic", what exactly does that mean in relation to this pic of my mic (attached photo 2)? Is connector 1 the furthest on the left in this pic of the microphone? Does that mean that the pin/connector furthest to the right in this pic is not used? Or do things go from right to left in relation to this photo?

Thanks in advanced for your help. I hope this works!

pin 1 on the mic will connect to pin 1 of the MULF connector
pin 2 of the mic will connect to pin 19 of the MULF connector
pin 3 of the mic is unused and is left empty
pin 21 of the MULF can be left empty. however, if you have bought shielded mic cables, you can connect the shielding to this pin.

for the mic connector, pin 1 is on the left.

You're referring to the orientation as shown in the mic photo above, right. Just double checking. Thanks, Snoozee.

Holy crap; it totally worked! Thanks to Snoozee and everyone else who has contributed to this thread. Amazing.

Also, if you are in the Seattle area and need coding done, I'd recommend Bim Coding. Kao rocks!

I have BMW voice and telephone prep but no USB. With this do I need a new Mulf? I assume I can use my existing mic?
