Finnicky Speaker!

Hey guys, there is a speaker in my car that only works sometimes.

I have a 2011 328i with the Harman Kardon system, and its the ~3in diameter speaker in the front left door (right above the window controls) that doesnt work sometimes.

I've only caught it not working 3 or 4 times now and one of the times I was able to rap on the speaker itself with my knuckles and the sound flickered in and out.

Because of that I feel like this is either a speaker issue or something to do with the wiring connection to the speaker itself.

I haven't investigated further yet but I wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations or if anyone knew if this was a common problem with an easy fix?

My plan of attack is to take off the door panel and inspect the wiring and speaker, if nothing seems wrong there I will probably try to find a used speaker on ebay or something to put in there.

Any advice? Thanks!!

Speaker shown here right above the window controls.

Your path for repair is correct.
Not common for the speaker to go bad

Thanks for the links. I too thought it was odd for the speaker to fail so I'm really hoping its just a loose connection behind the door panel or something.

I will update this thread once I dig into it.

Just wanted to update this thread.

This morning I could tell that the sound from the left side of my car was not not as clear and strong as the right side.

So when I got to work, I pulled up youtube and put on a constant 5kHz tone (just to make listening to the speakers easier) and it seems like both the round speaker above the armrest AND the tweeter are finnicky on that left side.

As I slowly opened and closed the door, there were spots that the speakers would crackle a bit and become louder or softer. Is there a common ground or something in there shared by the two speakers?

I might investigate this weekend by removing the door panel.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Tonight I took my door panel off and inspected the speaker and connection.

Everything looked normal, but I did observe that the connection to the tweeter up by the window is actually performed through the main speaker on the door. So if the main speaker has a bad connection, so does the tweeter.

I measured the resistance across the coil of the main speaker and I measured around 1.5-.19Ohms, I'm not sure whats normal.

After plugging the connector back in and reassembling, the speaker works fine, only time will tell if it acts up again.

Thanks for the info. My wife's car has the same problem. I may take the door panel off tomorrow and have a look around.
