I have recently purchased a 2009 335i convertible and the sound system is pretty underwhelming. What are the recommendations out there for speakers/amp that is compatible with the original head unit? Thank you

first be sure of which sound system you have in a 2009 US car that would be
676 Hi Fi or 677 top hi fi . The first one is easy to modify the second one
677 is not because of the fiberoptic input and the 9 channel amp.
Use mdecoder.com to list your factory configuration.
This means amp and speakers the head unit is a different set of problems.

Hi Fi 676 stereo system is simple analog input and output.(easy to modify )
Top Hi FI aka Logic 7 aka HK is hard and or expensive to modify because of
Fiber optic Input from head unit and 9 channel amp .
There is one company that make a drop in amp for this called Mobridge I have
seen no others . Reprogramming of head unit to analog is possible but requires
the right software and hacking.

Similar DSP/amp and speakers from Mosconi/Gladen but I would go with Audiotec Fisher listed above.

If you have a convertible be sure to check all the seals and drains.
