Yeah, for me the pas pump and reservoir are the worst offenders... At least everything else is neat/compact. But the pas pump has its own belt, the reservoir has a super shonky bracket, and the hoses snake about all over the place even though they don't have far to go! I'd dearly love to replace it with an ehpas pump, but struggling to find one that would work correctly (sufficient pressure), and could be wired in without needing to talk to the CAN bus etc.

My Hamilton valve springs came in today, I got the stem seals and valves installed. Unfortunately I shot a valve stem retainer out of my tweezers and across the shop. Gone forever. I had to open up the old engine and steal one from it. That futile search and the following grave robbing expedition took up way too much valuable time but I'm pretty excited to finally be making forward progress again!

I got the head all buttoned up, timing set, etc... Turbos and oil lines mounted blah blah blah, you guys can see what's going here.

It was prettier without all the crap strapped to it but she's all rigged out. Just waiting on the r90 now, should be here any day, before dropping the engine in. I fitted the turbo nipple from my ATM boost hose kit, I liked the forge unit but this one seems to be a notch above in terms of quality. My ATM intake came in yesterday, also looks like a very nice unit. I ordered a CPS from tunemyeuro today as preventative maintenance after I saw Andrews facebook post about them becoming a more frequent issue.
I would feel badly if I failed to mention that I did like my forge unit and was very impressed with their customer service when my boost hose split. The reason I ordered the ATM boost hose kit is because I wanted to try something different. I plan to use the IC nipple from my old forge kit on the charge pipe side along with a silicone elbow to get rid of the last remaining factory boost connection. |

It may backfire and turn out to be a pain in the ass. I wanted to get rid of the canister to make it easier to service the pressure converters as well as declutter HPFP side. I figured the larger volume of the new hose vs old tubing along with the shorter vac line runs I might be able to get away with it. I still have an intact stock system if this doesn't work out

Stock bolts, the most boost I've read on stock turbos was 44psi and that was with methanol increasing air density. Didn't see a need to do studs on this engine

It looks that way but I made it so that the whole manifold assembly can be pulled from behind the head by grabbing and pulling the tee that runs to the master cylinder.
I thought about adding a check valve but I want to see how it performs as-is before adding any more complexity. I did add an extra nipple at the end of the manifold for the purpose of adding a reservoir if I find it necessary, for now it's capped. I've been running without a reservoir since I deleted the car with no issues. Not long ago I added one that I welded out of a gutted fuel filter thinking it might improve actuator response time but didn't observe any noticeable difference. |

Some back stepping made for a long weekend. I was developing a severe amount of anxiety about throwing that 92k mi engine in without doing the timing chains. I tore the damn thing down Friday night and got the chains in and block reassembled.
Saturday I got it back it to the state it was in Friday morning and then got it thrown back in its hole. Sunday was spent cleaning and installing cooling system, accessories and all the other crap. I'm down to exhaust, air box, HPFP and fuel lines then a few other odds and ends. USPS shows my r90 is just 200mi away now! |

Yozh, not sure if you're pulling my leg or not, it feels like this project has taken waaay longer than I should have let it (probably just paranoia from being a member of too many shitposting groups though ) But I agree, these things are ridiculously simple mechanically speaking and easy to work on when they're out.
Honestly, I told myself from the start I was going to take my time and be thorough and methodical but it's gotten kind of ridiculous. It's mostly from waiting on usps but my r90 finally made it to my local office so I'll be picking it up tomorrow! |

Thank you guys for the encouragement! I had to work this weekend but still managed some good progress. I got the r90, replaced the front cover seals and modified the new fca and got it all installed and the front of the engine all buttoned up.
Test fitted the ATM air box and mounted the new catch can and ccb plate but still need to run the hoses for it. Got the intercooler set up with the new ATM boost hose and the old forge boost hose nipple on the cold side with a silicone reducing elbow to the charge pipe. Worked out great! Meth system is hooked back up as well. I still need to repair a couple torn tabs on my bumper cover so I can put it back on and seal up the passenger wheel well under the air box. I'm also having my windshield replaced next week due to a couple cracks. After that I should have my DME back and be able to wrap things up and give this poor donor motor a proper break-in thrashing. |
