Can't find a DIY for rear differential change
Don't know if I am blind or what. I can't seem to find a DIY for how to change out my rear differential. I have the Bentley Service Manual for my 2007 335i MT, however, it isn't that clear. Can anybody point me in the right direction....including any special tools that I would need or bolts / nuts that need to be replaced??? Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't want to get into the project and find out that I am without wheels for a day or two....

Thanks for the info about changing the oil in the rear differential, however, I am looking for a DIY on how to change the differential itself. Thanks!

are you talking about replacing the lsd or are you interested in removing the pumpkin?

Thats cool. Diff will be arriving Tuesday so I can then install it. I am swapping the entire pumpkin. Still nothing totally solid as far as a DIY guide, but i've got some pics from other's that i've found online. Again, if anybody has done this before, any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

1. Drop exhaust (makes job easier 2. Unbolt half shafts 3. Unbolt center support bearing on drive shaft and support with wire. 4. Place Jack (preferably a transmission Jack, if not have 2 people) under pumpkin. 5. With AR wrench un-loosen the insert nut (turn clockwise to loosen). 6. After drive shaft spline is removed support with wire. 7. Un bolt the 3 nut locations on pumpkin and lower down with jack. * If you remove quibo to remove drive shaft (some do) tighten in below order. 1. Center support bearing (make sure not upside down, See pic below) 2. Quibo 3. Insert nut * replace all half shaft bolts and add dab of red loctite to threads.

I know I should be replacing bolts when I replace my differential. Should I be replacing all of the bolts that mount the two half shafts to the diff as well as the bolts that mount the drive shaft to the diff and the bolts that mount the diff to the frame?? I would hate to tear it all apart to find out that I can't get the hardware for a few days and not have my ride.
Thanks! |
