Did it on my car last week since it was leaking tranny fluid through the tranny sleeve. I used the kit from thectsc.com. It was a bit of a PIA to replace the tranny sleeve.

I followed this and it was spot on...
Just as a FYI... I did a "flush" (drained the pan filled it up drove around a bit repeated) then i dropped the pan and did the filter. Total was 12 quarts of oil. I used Redline D4 ATF, and after 500 miles it is running very well, no gear whine, and shifts are very solid feeling (especially in DS mode). |

Reminds me of Mercedes. Initially they pushed the "lifetime" agenda. Some owners ignored this (like I did) and changed their trans fluid anyway. Then shortly thereafter Mercedes began recommending trans fluid and filter changes at 39K miles, possibly due to trans failures at 70K miles for some. There are a lot of variables that contribute to wear, but changing the fluid has to be the best thing you can do for your trans. Based on that oil analysis above, now there's scientific proof as well.

Now here's the kicker. While doing a comparison search for oil pans, I put my VIN in realoem.com and it said that I have a GM GA6L45R transmission, not a ZR 6HP19. So I'm going to wait until I pull the cover off the bottom of the car and confirm it's a ZR transmission. It appears that the GM transmission is only for xis, but I got enough conflicting data that I'll check closely before draining the oil. Red Line D4 is not compatible with the GM transmission, and if that's the case, I'll just do the project another day. I assume that everyone who's done this has found a ZR transmission? For those with xis deciding to do this, make sure you get Dexron VI specs, not Shell M1375.4 specs. Last edited by iflyjetzzz; 07-27-2011 at 09:08 AM.. |

It's very unlikely that I've got a GM transmission; the BMW charts that I've seen indicate that it's only xi models that got GM transmissions in the E90/E91s. I fully expect to find a ZR transmission.
The more I think about this maintenance, the more I'm tempted to buy a new pan/filter. I think that changing the filter and most of the tranny fluid would take care of my tranny for several years - I'd be able to do this maintenance item just once instead of twice. I may just go to the BMW dealer today or tomorrow and have them tell me which transmission that I have. I should also probably get a printout of all maintenance that's been done, since it just went over 50K miles a couple of months ago. |

Thanks much; the dealer confirmed that I have a GM GA6L-45R transmission. Also confirmed by this VIN decoder: http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi And I jacked up my car and confirmed by the plate on the transmission that it's a GM transmission. That changes things quite a bit. I'll use the Red Line D4 in my wife's Acura, as that can be substituted for the crappy Honda Z-1 fluid. I'll need to get Dexron VI fluid and I'll buy a transmission filter. I priced out a filter and gasket for a bit over $110. I plan on using off the shelf Dexron VI, as all Dexron VI is manufactured to some pretty high specs. I'll try to put together a DIY half as good as this one. Just wanted to say thanks for the quick reply. Did this Tuesday morning and car shifts so so much smoother. My oil pan comes in tomorrow hopefully and Saturday I plan on changing fluid again along with pan/filter. Will follow up on how it goes.

Interesting, thanks for the diy! probably going to attempt this some time soon. Just got quoted for 700+ dollars on a mechatronics seal change that is leaking transmission fluid.
Any of you guys know if the seal is easily changed and accessible by the extra step of dropping the pan w/ the filter for the transmission oil? Thanks, Jeff |

Just finished doing my trans pan/filter! Super easy; 2hrs from start to finish with a crappy scissor jack. That 8mm fill plug was a female dog!!!
Oh, and BTW.. the drain plug is part of the pan as seen in picture #2 above ^ it even says so underneath it... the FILL plug is the one on the side of the tranny (8mm Allen). Last edited by brett_duenas; 11-05-2011 at 11:10 AM.. |

Adaptive Reset
Here's a link for the adaptive reset for the transmission. A good thing to do after changing fluid and filter. Made a world of a difference for me.
