N54 - engine oil - use 5w30 or 5w40?

Is it better to use 5w30 or 5w40 (or even 0w40) in an N54?

Does the 40 rating give better protection than 30 at high temps?

^ good question and I've been wondering the same. Does the 10 weight make that much difference under load and heat?

I use 5w40 and have done for the M54 and N52 engines I previsouly had. No issues and ran very well.

Since you're in canberra the 0W40 would be your best choice (cold temps!)

With the 0W40 you get the best of both worlds, but of course its slightly more expensive.

I would use the oil viscosity recommended by BMW.

I use the 0w40 when I top up, but I checked with the local dealer and they still use 5w30...

I had a long discussion with the Castrol helpline person (who actually did sound knowledgeable!), and he did say something about 30 being slightly better than 40 on an older engine. Or was it the 5w vs 0w, I can't remember.

Autobarn has got 30% off Plastdip sprays this Saturday (30 Sep), as well as some other discounts on other things.

Might get Gunmetal/Charcoal for my 313 rims!

Autobarn has 30% off all engine oils, dash cams and car audio this weekend. Looks like it's open to everyone and not just Autobarn club members.

E.g. Castrol 5W30 5L down to $49ish, Mobil 1 0w40 5L to $67ish
