E91 with no sound (and missing equipment??) - Update: Now solved...

Issue solved, it was a missing center channel speaker. See post #13 below....
__________________________________________________ ___________________

Hi all,

I recently got myself a project e91 (2006 325xi). She has had a hard life, and has a long list of items to fix.

Currently she has no audio. the head-unit turns on, but nothing from speakers. The seller mentioned some part needed to be replaced in the back. I presumed I could do that optic cable loop trick to fix the MOST setup.

Nope, it looks like it is just outright missing any components in the trunk.

Questions/ options:
- I presume something is missing in the trunk?
- Can I just get one of the Android head units for the e9x, or will it still require some sort of amp in the back?
- If I need to buy something for the back, what the code/ name of the device?

Thank you

A US E91 comes with option 676 or 677 for amp and speakers.
A Canadian E91 may come with the base system which
is no amp and no tweeters.
The part you are looking at in the Trunk is where the SAT module left blank spot
and TCU right with disconnected bundle of wires
would be .
First job is to find out what the car came with.
RUN MEDECODER.COM
Run Mdecoder.com on your Vin and look in the 6XX range for the stereo
options . Lack of the two option listed 676 or 677 indicates the base system.

The unplugged bundlle of wires is for the TCU telephone control unit.
Since the TCU is no longer supported due to telephone system not using 2g
anymore there is no need to replace it with another TCU .
You could replace it with Mulf 2 Hi and do some programming this would give you USB
or a Mr12volt module could give you usb , sd card , streaming bluetooth music ,
phone and another AUX.
Some programming will be necessary to make this work .
TCU can be bypassed with a Most Loop jumper this may bring the audio back
if you have a 677 option top Hi Fi in which the Amp is and element in the Most Loop.
Most Loop jumpers are cheap on Amazon.

If you have a system with the factory amp it is located behind the US drivers side
rear wheel well. Read all the links first please.

TCU being absent could cause SOS errors. The TCU is the SOS error system plus
runs the bluetooth cell phone connection . The error can be programmed out.

Thank you very much for the info. I have started reading all those links. I was not aware of the VIN decoder. Very cool, thanks.
So it appears that I have the 677 option. At least I know where to start and what to aim for.

ok, we see that amp probably got some water
so you need to check amp fuse, fusebox located behind passenger glovebox
there is a door which is opened when glovebox is open and fusebox contain red tool to insert and remove fuses, there are also spare fuses
if fuse is ok or you'll replace it, then check if sound will work, if not - you need to swap amp and code it to your car body type

First thing I notice is since you don't have a TCU in the Most Bus Loop
is likly open. This can be fixed with a Most jumper it might bring the
sound back. Most cars come with a TCU maybe yours didn't .
But the cables are usually wrapped in foam at the connection point
for uninstalled options.(If it didn't come with a TCU then this is not
a problem .)
Second thing in regards to the amp is there are diagnostic Led's in the
Amp that can tell you things like is it communicating with the Head
Unit or power and up and down status.

I would get BMW diagnostics .
If you can get Standard Tools and Ista D both of which where free downloads
and K/D can cable . They are getting harder to get now .
A second choice would be the Pro Tool from bimmergeeks.

Ista D is like a shop manual with guided trouble shooting and a searchable database.

See the coding subforum .

OK, an update...

Looking inside the AMP I noticed the red and orange lights flashing on and off slowly. So this tells me that it had power, but had an error. I also noticed light coming out the fiber optic cable back at the front of the car, so the optic signal was not being interrupted.

So I deduced that the amp was damaged.

I went and bought another amp from a salvage yard a couple of days ago. I plugged it in, and got audio! YAY!! And then 20seconds later the audio stopped, and the "new" amp also flashed the red and orange LED's, telling me that this also had an issue.

So I was starting to suspect there was something wrong with the car.

I checked continuity on each of the speaker twisted pairs. The Brown/black and white/black twisted pair does not have continuity. Based on the diagram posted above, this appears to be the center channel speaker. So that is where I will focus my efforts going forward (unless anybody else has a better plan?)

I was able to source a replacement (2nd hand) center speaker. This is all that was needed for the system run.
So in conclusion, do continuity tests on all your channels. It appears that the amp won't work if some of the speakers are not working/ connected.

Thanks everybody for the info. I could not have cleared this issue without your support.

(anybody in Vancouver BC area need to buy a working Logic7 amp?)
