I've got a 08 e92 335i that makes a awful static sounds from the speakers even after turning the car off. The head unit works but no sound comes from the speakers besides random static. I also noticed the SOS light comes on sometimes. This issue only started today and it poured rain all day yesterday which leads me to believe something like the amp got wet and is causing this issue but I am not sure how to diagnose this. Taking it to the dealer or a shop is not really an option for me.

first step with audio problems in the cars that have amps .
Check the trunk area for water.
Amp is located below the trunk floor behind the rear wheel well
on US cars that are sedans or wagons not sure about converts.

Water short out amp which part of the Most bus . Breaks the Most
bus connection which makes all devices on the most bus error out.

This is such a common problem there have been class action law suits
for it on the 5 series but it effects the three series to.

replacement amps can be found on ebay . Hi Fi amps are dirt cheap. Logic 7 amps more expensive but way cheaper than BMW on ebay.

Thanks for the response. Very helpful. There was almost an inch of water around the amp in the trunk. I did not have the nylon washers on the tail light bolts which is probably where the water came in.

Do you know if other logic 7 amps are interchangeable from the 5 series and 6 series?

You better read the ytube on where all the leaks come from on the convertible
trunk. see last part of this entry for leaks
most leaks do not come from the lights though it is still a possible point for leaks.
drain exits can also be the source of major water backups.
